Hold on to your hats, it is DOUBLE POINTS Night at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (May 14, 2003) - Saturday night, May 17, will be no holds barred as all FASCAR divisions go for "DOUBLE" points. This is a time when you can make or break a points lead and all drivers will be ready to rumble as the green drops down.
David Rogers, last year's Super Late Model Champion, has won every race thus far this year but one. Rogers, who knows the track blindfolded, has proven over and over again that he is the "King" of NSS. Rogers comes into "double points" night with 236 points.
Only 8 points separate second and third place points holder's Wayne Parker and B.J. McLeod. Parker has proven that he can drive a Super Late and has one that can win. McLeod, who came back to his home tracks earlier this year, is the only driver thus far this year to beat David Rogers. Twelve points behind McLeod in fourth is Guy Thomas who improves weekly and is becoming a very good contender. Joe Fitos rounds out the top five with 80 points.
Brian Bellaw holds a 16 point lead over second place Bobby Orr. Orr, who missed one race, had been the early points leader for the Late Models. A few weeks back, Orr and Bellaw touched on the frontstretch sending them both sailing into the frontstretch pit wall. Bellaw was able to repair his Late Model and return the next week but Orr was not. Both will race hard Saturday for the double points win.
Mark Smith comes in third with 120 points but 8 points behind Smith is Tim Clark, our first time winner last week. Clark, who just debuted his new Late Model, has shown that it is a car that can win. Timmy Todd rounds out the top five with 80 points. This class could use some more cars so if you have a Late Model and want to race with some very good guys, come to New Smyrna Speedway and try us out. I think you will like us alot.
2001 Open Wheel Modified Champion Mark Vandevender leads the points for the Mods. Vandevender holds a 16 point lead over second place Bobby Blake. Chad Pierce has now moved into third with 88 points but sitting right behind Pierce is the 2002 Open Wheel Modified Champion Justin Henderson. Henderson had a nasty visit with the turn 1 wall not long ago and has been out several weeks due to repairs. Hopefully he will return to action soon.
Three drivers are tied in fifth with 76 points each - David Castello, Brad May and Paul Duncan. With "double points" up for grabs, this will be one tight fight.
Billy Spade lost his engine last week in practice but still came out with the points lead in the Sportsman division after the disqualification of the race winner Ron Lufcy.
Lufcy, who would have passed Spade and take over the lead, still sits in second with 160 points. Bill Love and Jim Snyder are tied at third and fourth with 132 points each. Chris Pedulat sits in fifth with 104 points but in sixth is Paul Colgan, only 4 points behind Pedulat and coming up fast.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail still holds the points lead for the Mini Stock division but closing in is Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus, only 16 points behind McPhail. These are two very strong cars and good drivers and you never know with them who will take the checkered.
Rex Christensen has come along way and firmly sits in third with 204 points followed by Ben Hutto with 124 points and Troy Kruse, our newest team member, with 100 points. Wayne Clark runs sixth with 82 points and is having a really good time racing.
Last week's surprise in this division was the return of the #1 Mini Stock David Castello, the 2002 Mini Stock Division Champion and the Valvoline Cup winner for Asphalt Stock. Castello plans to run the Mini for the new owner whenever he is asked. This class too can use a boost so please bring out your Minis and come join our family for some family fun and good racing.
Ron Whaley leads the Super Stock division points with 256 points but only 16 points behind Whaley is last week's race winner Charlie Collins at 240 points. Josh Wronkowski and Jeff Colburn hold third and fourth in points with Bob Trombley and Ted Head coming in tied at fifth and sixth.
Strictly Stocks will also be in action Saturday night.
Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. New Smyrna Speedway is located at the intersection of SR44 ans SR417 eight miles west of New Smyrna in Samsula, Florida.
