Pro Modifieds Roll into SpeedWorld for 50 Laps of Open Wheel Action | by Jane Smith
Bithlo, Fla (May 14, 2003) - When the Team FASCAR Pro Modified Series hits the 3/8th mile oval of Orlando SpeedWorld, it will be there second visit of the year but the first event since all other dates were rained out. After the first race of the series, Jerry Symons holds a 8 point lead over Bryan Campbell. But, Symons will not be in the line-up for Friday night's action as he has a broken arm at the present with a very big cast on it.
Making the long trip from Bradenton, Florida will be D.J. Hoelzle, who set fast time for the first rained out race, at Orlando SpeedWorld. Hoelzle stands only 3 points out of second with 98 points. Alan McCafferty comes in fourth in points at 80. Red Vann fills out the top five with 81 points.
Other drivers expected to show for the 50 lap race are Bobby Blake, Jason Boyd, Matt Wheeler, Skip Honaker, Andy Saffioti, Raymond Vann, Alan Bruns, Glen Bradley, Jim "Hoot" Flynn, and possibility a few regulars from SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway.
Qualifying for the Pro Mod race will be at 7 p.m. depending on car count.
Derrick Wood still holds the point lead for the Bandolero Bandits with 268 points. Matt Bowers, Gerald White, Jr., Chad Atkins, and Matthew Jarrett fill out the top five.
Kevin Kenry holds the points lead for the Bandolero Young Guns with 284 points. Moving into second is Brandon Thomson, last week's winner. Sam Watts falls back to third after last week's no show. Troy Atkins and Scott Jarrett fill out the top five.
B.J. McLeod and Rusty Ebersole are in a very tight battle for the points lead in the Super Late Model dvision. McLeod holds a 12 point lead over Ebersole who won last week. Ricky Wood, Ronnie Roach and Aric Almirola fill out the top five. This class has been slowly building each week with 14 or more Super Lates in the field each week.
Doug Samion still holds the points lead for the Sportsman division but coming up fast is Richard Hight. Samion holds a 13 point lead over Hight who won last weekend on the last lap after Donnie Smith and Doug Samion were sent to the rear for contact. Michael Albert sits in third with Justin Hall in fourth and Erick Traves in fifth. Traves hit the wall hard last weekend and hopefully was able to repair his machine.
Shane Held, the 2001 Open Wheel Modified Champion for SpeedWorld, sits in the lead with 216 points followed by Matt Wheeler with 188 points. Jason Boyd comes in third with 152 points after missing last week's race due to the Goodyear Challenge Late Model race at Charlotte County Speedway in Punta Gorda.
Glen Bradley, Lynn Dicandio and Dave Riley are running neck and neck as they are third, fourth and fifth. Only 8 points separate the three. Bradley sits at 116, Dicandio at 108 and Riley at 100.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail has a strong lead over his fellow Mini Stockers with 216 points. Dick Laszlo, our only Mini Truck, moved into second with 120 points after Sean Bass missed last week's race. Bass fell to third with 108 points followed by Chad Pierce with 80 points and Pedie Allison with 60.
Super Stocks have the weekend off but when they return May 23, Cory Freed, last year's champion, holds the points lead with 252 points, only 20 points over second place Bob Wines.
Billy Cuddy sits in third with 196 points followed by Mike Soukup with 144 points and Ron Whaley with 140 points. This class will fight to the bitterend so the battles is no where near over.
Grandstands open at 6 p.m. Qualifying for the Pro Modified 50 lapper will be at 7 p.m. depending on car count (could be earlier). Racing action begins at 8 p.m.
