All FASCAR Divisions will be in action May 10 | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (May 7, 2003) All FASCAR divisions will be in action Saturday, May 10, with heats and features. As the weather gets hotter, so does the points battles in all divisions.
Last weekend B.J. McLeod finally lead all 25 laps to take the feature win. David Rogers, who has won every race thus far this season, tried to take the lead on lap 24 coming off turn 2 but wiggled and gave McLeod just enough time to get far enough ahead that Rogers could not catch him. That was B.J.'s first win in about three years at the l/2 mile track.
Going into this weekend's action, David Rogers still holds the points lead in the Super Lates with 196 points. Wayne Parker sits in second with 132 points but coming up fast behind Parker is B.J. McLeod with 120 points passing last week's third in points Guy Thomas who is only 4 points behind McLeod with 116. Joe Fitos rounds out the top five with 80 points.
Brian Bellaw with the Jolly Roger's/Blackies Saloon Chevy took over the points lead in the Late Model division last weekend. Previous points leader Bobby Orr was absent from the field giving Bellaw the chance he needed to add up points.
Orr now stands second in points with 108. Mark Smith still holds third with 100 points. Tim Clark debuted his brand new Late Model last weekend and came in second in the race giving him enough points to move into fourth with 72 points. Chris Lawrence slide to fifth with 60 points.
Late Models will be in action this weekend at New Smyrna Speedway although some will be at Charlotte County Speedway for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series. Leading the points in the Goodyear Late Model Series is Jerry Artuso followed by Rich Clouser, Jason Boyd, Brad May and Larry Osteen.
Mark Vandevender holds a 20 points lead in the Open Wheel Modified division over Bobby Blake. Justin Henderson sits in third with 84 points in spite of the fact that he has missed several races due to rebuilding his machine. Three drivers are tied in fourth, fifth, and sixth with 76 points each - David Castello, Chad Pierce and Brad May. This week's feature will definitely make a difference in this close battle especially since May will be at Charlotte County Speedway for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model event. David Rogers sits in seventh with 68 points and will surely advance this week.
Bill Spade holds the lead for the Sportsman division with 188 points. But with the return of last year's champion Donnie Williams, Spade may soon find his hands full of trying to keep the point lead. Ron Lufcy sits in second with 160 points. Bill Love holds third with 108 points, just four points more than fourth place Jim Snyder at 104. Snyder has gotten faster and faster and once his handling is figured out, everyone better watch out for the #55 Sportsman. Chris Pedulat sits in fifth with 100 points.
Although the Mini Stocks were off last weekend, a number of new Mini Stocks are expected for this weekend's action. Hopefully returning to the track will be the #00 Mike Sible and Vern Rozier.
Going into this week's battle, Tim "Missileman" McPhail leads the points with 208, twenty points more than second place Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus at 188. Rex Christensen rides in third with 180 points followed by Ben Hutto with 108 in fourth. Wayne Clark and Troy Kruse are tied in fifth with 72 points each.
Ron Whaley won last week's race in the Super Stocks but was disqualified in tech for being light losing his points and money. Whaley still holds a slight lead in points with 220. But coming up fast is second place Josh Wronkowski who is only 12 points behind Whaley and running really good this year. Charlie Collins stands in third with 200 points. Fourth place Jeff Colburn comes in at 176 points. Fifth place is yet another tie between Ted Head Bob Thombley with 88 points each.
Strictly Stocks saw the top three disqualifried last week for technical reasons. This class is a strictly "stock" class, the novice class. They return also for heats and feature racing this weekend.
New Smyrna Speedway opens their grandstands at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. Rain checks from the main grandstands last week will get you 2 for 1 this weekend.
