As the Weather Heats Up, so does the Asphalt at Orlando SpeedWorld

by Jane Smith

Bithlo, Fla (May 6, 2003) The weather in Central Florida is getting really hot just as the action at the 3/8th's mile Orlando SpeedWorld is also heating up. Points are tight which means racing is hot.

Derrick Wood leads the Bandolero Bandits in points but not far behind, just 28 points, is Matt Bowers. Gerald White, Jr. fell from second to third in points after a bad finish last weekend. Chad Atkins stands fourth with 160 points followed by Matthew Jarrett in fifth with 132 points.

Kevin Henry leads the Bandolero Young Guns division with 248 points. Thirty six points behind Henry is Sam Watts at 212. Brandon Thomson sits in third with 200 points. Troy Atkins and Scott Jarrett, a first time winner last week, are tied in fifth with 176 points each.

Due to the Team FASCAR Sunbelt Super Late Model Series 125 lap race last Friday night, the Super Lates were off. But coming into Friday night's action will be B.J. McLeod leads the points by 20 over second place Rusty Ebersole. Ricky Wood, Ronnie Roach, and Aric Almirola complete the top five in points. The Super Lates will be running heats and feature this Friday night.

Doug Samion finally lost a race as Richard Hight won the Sportsman feature last weekend. Richard stands 29 points behind point leader Samion. Although he was absent last weekend at the track, Michael Albert stands third in points with 136, 20 points ahead of fourth place Justin Hall. Erick Traves rounds out the top five with 96 points.

Shane Held took over the points lead last weekend in the Open Wheel Modified division with his second place run. Held stands at 176 points but coming up fast is Jason Boyd who comes in at 152 points. Matt Wheeler stands third with 148 points. Glen Bradley sits pretty solid in fourth with 116 points with Lynn Dicandio in fifth with 88 points. This looks to be a battle until the year's end with some really good modifieds in the field each Friday night.

The Mini Stocks were off last weekend due to the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series race at Citrus County Speedway but will be in action this Friday night.

Tim "Missleman" McPhail leads the points with 176. Sean Bass, winner of the first race of the season, stands in second with 108 points. Dick Laszlo, the only Mini Truck in the bunch, is third with 88 points but only 8 points behind Laszlo is Chad Pierce in fourth with 80 points. Pedie Allison holds fifth with 60 points.

Super Stocks will run a 50 lap race this weekend which means alot of these cars will show up at the track. Cory Freed, last year's champion, is leading the points race with 212 points. Just 16 points behind Freed is Bob Wines with 196 points. Billy Cuddy comes in third with 192 points. Mike Soukup stands in fourth with 144 points followed by Ron Whaley in fifth with 136 points.

Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with qualifying for the Super Stocks to be at 7:00 p.m.(depending on car count can be earlier). Racing begins at 8:00 p.m. There will be no Strictly Stocks this weekend with the 50 lap Super Stock race.

Remember, rain checks from last weekend are good for 2 for 1 this Friday night. Bring a friend, bring a child, come and join the fun at Orlando SpeedWorld this Friday night and introduce someone new to racing.
