Sportsman Return to Action on May 3 at New Smyrna Speedway | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla. (April 30, 2003) - After having a week off, Sportsman drivers are eager to get back to New Smyrna Speedway and racing action on the one-half mile 18 degree banking oval loving called NSS.
Bill Spade returns with the points lead in the Sportsman division but close behind, only 20 points difference, is Ron Lufcy who is looking for the win and getting closer and closer each week. Early point leader Earl Beckner stands in third and only 4 points more than fourth place Jim Snyder at 88 points. Bill Love sits in fifth but only 4 points behind fourth place Snyder.
Danny Shearer and Chris Peludat are tied in sixth with 68 points each followed by eighth place Dennis Gilman. Mike Trocki, Dale Clouser and Cory Kaiser are tied in ninth, tenth and eleventh with 48 points each.
Even though the Team FASCAR Sunbelt Super Late Model Series will run the night before at Orlando SpeedWorld, the Super Lates are on the program for May 3. David Rogers has won every race thus far this year and leads the points with 160 points.
Wayne Parker stands in second with 104 points over Guy Thomas with 96 points. B.J. McLeod, who is leading the points at Orlando SpeedWorld, comes in at fourth with 80 points. Joe Fitos runs fifth with 64 points.
B.J. has lead two previous races, the first one for 8 laps, the second for 13 laps. Now his goal is to lead for all 25 laps and win over his friend David Rogers. Can it be done, can B.J. beat Rogers??? Be there to find out.!!!!!
Bobby Orr holds the points lead for the Late Models but after last week's bad luck, only holds a 28 point lead over second place Brian Bellaw. Bellaw and Orr were racing hard last weekend and touched causing them both to spin wildly and end up in the frontstretch wall. Both drivers were fine but they did have some work to do this week on their cars.
Mark Smith stands third with 68 points but only 8 points behind Smith is last week's winner Chris Lawrence. Timmy Todd and Wade Lynn are tied in fifth with 52 points each.
Mark Vandevender holds the points lead for the Open Wheel Modifieds with 172 points, 32 points more than second place Bobby Blake. Justin Henderson, the 2002 Open Wheel Modified Champion, sits in third with 84 points after taking a week off for repairs to his modified after a racing incident sent him into the turn one wall. Matt Wheeler comes in fourth with 72 points and Skip Honaker rides fifth with 56 points.
The Mini Stocks are off this week due to the race at Citrus County Speedway for the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series. But Tim "Missileman" McPhail leads the points with 208 over second place Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus with 188 points. Rex Christensen stands third with 180 points followed by Ben Hutto with 108 and newcomer Troy Kruse. Expect a number of new Mini Stocks when their division return on May 10.
Ron Whaley holds the lead on the Super Stocks over Josh Wronkowski, Jeff Colburn, Charlie Collins, and Bob Trombley and Ted Head who are tied in fifth. Whaley is on a mission this year to win the championship and has proven week after week that he means what he says. With a number of really good Super Stocks, this will be one hard fought championship for the winner.
Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action at 7:30 p.m. Remember, all FASCAR divisions except Mini Stocks will be racing including the fan favorite Strictly Stocks.
