Travis Kittleson Extends ASA Rookie Points Lead | Pendleton, Ind. (April 22, 2003) – Florida’s Travis Kittleson extended his lead April 19 in the battle for the $50,000 Rookie of the Year award in the American Speed Association after finishing a career-best second in the BFGoodrich Tires 250 at Concord Motorsport Park and advancing to third in the driver points. Kittleson, who drives the No. 30 Bob Steele Chevrolet, produced his second top- five finish in three events and his third top-10 as the young ASA season gathers steam.
Boris Jurkovic was also on the move in the rookie standings, posting a career- best eighth-place finish at Concord and wheeling the No. 66 Phil Hines entry into second position, 101 points behind Kittleson. Jurkovic has finished on the lead lap in each of the initial three events, fueling his climb up the freshman standings.
Georgia youngster Reed Sorenson got back on track in the BFGoodrich Tires 250, registering his second top-10 finish of 2003 and moving up to third behind Kittleson and Jurkovic. Sorenson ran as high as second at Concord, but a late tangle with eventual winner Davin Scites resulted in a spin that knocked him back to a 10th-place finish.
Ryan Hemphill slid from third to fourth position in the standings after completing only 206 laps and placing 24th in the 34-car field at the .50-mile trioval. Scites, who earned his first career ASA Racing Series victory at Concord, rose to fifth in the rookie points.
Maine standout Tracy Gordon holds down the sixth position in the $50,000 Rookie standings with Casey Smith, Kris Stump, Brett Sontag and Jesse Klug rounding out the rookie crop.
