Super Lates and Late Models Return to Regular Racing with Special V-8 Demo Derby at NSS | by Jane Smith
Samsula, Fla (April 15, 2003) All FASCAR divisions will run this weekend at New Smyrna Speedway on April 19. Returning to the high banks of New Smyrna Speedway will be the Super Late Models and Late Models after having last Saturday off for the Sunbelt Super Late Model Series and Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series run at Lakeland's USA International.
David Rogers leads the points race for the Super Late Models with 80 points having won both regular Super Late Model races in the 2003 beginning season. Coming in the second spot is Wayne Parker with 64 points followed by Joe Fitos with 44 points. Guy Thomas holds fourth with 40 points followed by Bruce Lawrence, Jr. in fifth with 36 points.
Bobby Orr, the 2002 Mini Stock Champion at Orlando SpeedWorld, holds the points lead for the Late Models with 68 points followed by another rookie, David Green with 44 points in second. Mark Smith and Brian Bellaw, the 2002 Late Model Champion at New Smyrna Speedway, are tied for third with 40 points each. Bellaw, who just returned to racing, won his first race for the new season. Tim Clark and Kenny Crites are tied for fifth with 36 points each. This has the potential of being a very close race for the championship.
Mark Vandevender is showing the way for the Open Wheel Modifieds with 96 points, 32 points ahead of second place Bobby Blake at 64 points. Justin Henderson, the 2002 Points Champion for Mods, is sitting in third with 52 points. Matt Wheeler holds fourth place with 44 points but five drivers are tied for the fifth position with 40 points each. John Zidek, Brad May, Jim "Hoot" Flynn, David Hites and Jerry Symons all sit in the same boat for now. Symons was the big winner last weekend at the Tommy Patterson Memorial Pro Mod race at New Smyrna.
Bill Spade leads the way for the Sportsman division with 112 points over Ron Lufcy in second with 100 points. Earl Beckner, who won the first two races this year in the Sportsman division, had a bad night and slide to third in points with 92. Jim Snyder sits in fourth with 72 points followed by Danny Shearer in fifth with 68 points.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail currently leads both Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway in the Mini Stock division points. McPhail has 136 points over second place Rex Christensen with 124 points. Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus sits in third with 112 points. Ben Hutto and Bob Delmastro sit fourth and fifth with 64 points and 52 points respectively.
Ron Whaley has shown he is the man to beat this year as he leads the Super Stock division with 140 points. But only 16 points behind Whaley is Charlie Collins with 124. Collins, who was known for blowing motors last year, has figured out how to race without losing the motor this year. Josh Wronkowski has two wins under his belt so far this season and sits third in points with 116. Rounding out the top five are Jeff Colburn with 104 points followed by Bob Trombley with 84 points.
This week at New Smyrna Speedway, all FASCAR divisions are racing plus a V-8 Demo Derby. New Smyrna Speedway is located at the intersection of SR44 and SR415 between I-4 and I-95, eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach.
