0th Annual Tommy Patterson Memorial this weekend at New Smyrna Speedway | Samsula, Fla - New Smyrna Speedway will feature the FASCAR Pro Modifieds this weekend, April 12, in the 9th annual Tommy Patterson Memorial. The 50 lap event will mark the beginning for the Pro Mod Series as the original first race was rained out twice at Orlando SpeedWorld and was eventually reschedule for May 23.
A number of modifieds are expected for the annual event including Jerry Symons, Bryan Campbell, Jim "Hoot" Flynn, Jared Allison, 2002 New Smyrna Speedway Open Wheel Modified Champion Justin Henderson, Mark Vandevender (2001 Track Champion), newcomer David Castello, and many more.
Qualifying for the Tommy Patterson Memorial will begin at 6 p.m.
The Classic Auto Racing Series will also make their first appearance at New Smyrna Speedway in 2003. Bud Spencer was the big winner at Orlando SpeedWorld but watch out for Al Hagan, Ben Booth, Joey Strehle, Jim Rahman, Ed Yates and State Senator Bill Posey.
Posey hopes to make as many races as possible for the 2003 season and got his first experience on dirt at Thundercross Motorsports Complex not long ago. But Posey has plenty of experience in behind the wheel time on asphalt so he will be definitely on the win list this year.
With the Sunbelt Super Late Model Series and the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series racing at Lakeland's USA International this weekend, April 12, there will be no Super Lates or Lates at New Smyrna Speedway.
But action won't be lacking as the Sportsman, Mini Stock, Super Stock and Strictly Stock will offer plenty of non-top racing action.
Earl Beckner has been the winner in the Sportsman division but last Saturday night saw Paul Colgan debut his new car and take the Sportsman win. Colgan, a full-time Sportsman racer at Orlando SpeedWorld last year, proved that he has a winning car.
A few cars were damaged last Saturday but hopefully the drivers have been able to repair the damages during the week.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail leads the points in the Mini Stock division but last week it was Wayne Clark in the winner's circle. Clark did not race alot in 2002 but hopefully we will see more of him in 2003.
Rex Christensen stands second in points and had a solid second place finish last week passing McPhail for the spot in the ending laps. Ted "Mr Mini Stock" Vulipus runs third in points.
Ron Whaley took the win in the Super Stocks feature last week as the points leader Josh Wronkowski was not in the field. Charlie Collins stood second in points and with his solid second place finish should be in the lead in points and running neck in neck with Whaley.
Jerry Symons wiped the field out in the Open Wheel Modified feature but it is Mark Vandevender who leads the points over 2002 Point Champion Justin Henderson. With the Tommy Patterson Memorial this weekend, no points will be given for the regular modified division.
James Smith Sr. is still showing off his racing skills by winning yet another Strictly Stock race. Since these guys race for trophys and no points, it only enriches the action as they fight their way to the front and that trophy.
New Smyrna Speedway is located at the intersection of SR44 and SR415, between I-4 and I-95, eight miles west of New Smyrna Beach. Grandstands open at 6 p.m. with racing action beginning at 7:30 p.m. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
