Four Divisions Join USCS Sprints Friday at Ocala | by Dave Westerman
Outlaw Sprint Cars invade Ocala Speedway Friday night in the form of the United Sprint Car Series as they began a two day show in the State of Florida.
Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL, the winner of the USCS Asphalt Thunder opener at Mobile, AL, will lead a host of sprint car standouts from around the Southeast into Ocala Speedway for the first ever visit by the USCS club to the historic facility.
Along with the sprints, fans will be treated to action in four of Ocala Speedway's regular racing divisions.
The WIND-FM Modifieds will be back to racing for Ocala Speedway points after last week's UPM special won by Clermont's Alan McCafferty who now has two wins in a row here.
Anthony's David Baxley and Tampa's Johnny Newsome are tied for the lead in the points race after two point-paying events just three points ahead of Jamie Tinkham and Jeremy Gerstner who are tied for third and six points ahead of John Foerg in fifth.
The Mini Stocks have also run just two points events this year and Williston's Larry Goolsby used last week's feature win to vault himself into the top of the points heap by four over Wayne Wells. Marlon Durbin, Joey Brinson, and Jake Garver complete the top five in Mini Stock points.
Both the K-Country Street Stocks and Four Cylinder Stocks have been the backbone of the show so far this year, running all four nights, and both will be in action again this week.
Ocala's Doug Webster has finished third three times and fourth once and it's that consistency that has the 2002 champion back on top of the standings by four markers over another very steady driver, Mark Mitchell.
Tommy Roberts won the first two races of the year, but fell out of the points lead with a DNF last week. Roberts is now third, 15 points behind Webster and just three markers ahead of Estle Morrow who continues to have good runs each week. Kyle Maynard is fifth in points, just two behind Morrow.
With Justin Durbin not racing last week, Tom Ellis has been able to build a rather healthy early-season lead of 12 points over defending champion Ric Fort in the Four Cylinder Stocks.
Steady Rick Kuhn is just a point behind Fort while Weird Harold Barup moves up to fourth in the tally this week and Joel Byall also finds himself in the top five.
Pit gates open at 4PM, Grandstands at 6PM with USCS Sprint Car time trials slated for 7:30PM and racing at 8PM. A large crowd is expected so plan to arrive early.
