911 SERIES, SPORTSMAN RUN TOGETHER AT CHARLOTTE COUNTY SPEEDWAY

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Back in 1993, a group of policemen decided to form a touring racing series called Top Cops with the proceeds going to charity.

Here we are 10 years later and the series lives on. There has been a name change to 911 Racing so it can include firemen and other emergency personnel.

The 911 Racing Series will make its first stop of the year at Charlotte County Speedway this Saturday night. They will run in the same 35-lap race with Charlotte County Speedway?s sportsman division. The rules of the two divisions are similar.

Bob Hart, who drives the No. 2 Pinellas County Sheriff?s Department Pontiac, said it will make for better raciing running with the sportsman.

?Some of our our guys are in the military reserve and can?t race,? Hart said. ?We?ll be running with sportsman around the state this year. We started it at Sunshine Speedway and it worked out well.?

Besides the 911/sportsman race, there will be three regular divisions racing Saturday night -- super stocks, thunder trucks and road warriors.

In addition, there will be a special train race. Three cars are chained together to make an entry. It is a fun event for the entire family.

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for children ages 11 and under.

Charlotte County Speedway is located off Exit 161 of I-75 on Piper Road in Punta Gorda.
