Orlando SpeedWorld set for 2nd Try for opening of 2003 Race Season | by Jane Smith BITHLO, Fla.(March 19, 2003) - After a three month layoff of racing at Orlando SpeedWorld, fans were eager to get back to the track outside of Orlando in the small town of Bithlo. Fans looked forward to the opening night for the 2003 season but as they say, not all plans go as scheduled.
Just when it looked like the severe weather that had affected part of Florida last Friday had missed Orlando SpeedWorld, big, huge drops of rain began to fall and suddenly buckets were falling. The FASTRUCKS were on the track for their 50 lap feature and they had gotten 37 laps in before the race was red flagged and Jimmy Gill was given the win. No other divisions got to race.
This Friday night, March 21, Orlando SpeedWorld will try again for the first Pro Modified 50 lap event for 2003. Qualifying last Friday saw D.J. Hoelzle set fast time for the 50 lap feature. Hoelzle was fifth in points at the 2003 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing Open Wheel Modified division at New Smyrna Speedway and won the last race for the modifieds in that 9 night event.
Sportsman, Super Stock and Strictly Stocks will have double features due to the rainout last weekend. The Super Late Models and Mini Stocks will return along with the Legends. Since no regular division races were run last weekend, there are no point leaders as of yet for Orlando SpeedWorld.
Orlando SpeedWorld races on Friday nights at 8 p.m. If you like short track stockcar racing and some beating and banging action, please join us at Orlando SpeedWorld for a fun filled night of racing. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
