CARQUEST Road to Charlotte Set to Invade New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday | by Jane Smith SAMSULA, Fla. (March 29, 2003) - The Carquest Road to Charlotte will invade New Smyrna Speedway this Saturday night, March 22, as the Goodyear Challenge Late Models race 100 laps around the one-half mile 18 degree high banks of New Smyrna Speedway.
Hosted by CARQUEST Auto Parts and Lowe's Motor Speedway, the Road to Charlotte winner will receive an invitation to participate in the Carquest 300 Busch Grand National race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May.
Anticipated drivers for this 100 lap event are Jerry Symons, the 2002 Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series Champion, Jason Boyd, Wayne Morris, Tim Russell, Bobby Orr, Chris Lawrence, Randy Dye, and many more. Qualifying for the Carquest Road to Charlotte will begin at 6 p.m.
The Super Late Models will return this weekend as they were off last weekend when the Sunbelt Super Late Model Series was at Ocala Speedway and Bronson Motor Speedway. Points will begin this weekend for that division.
Coming back to his roots, B.J. McLeod returns to Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway with his #78 Super Late Model for some good "ole" weekly Super Late Model action. McLeod was a competitor in the All American Challenge Series at Desoto Speedway but has withdrawn due to safety factors.
DeSoto's loss is Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway's gain as B.J. has been a past champion in the Super Late Model Division.
Going into race two for the 2003 season, Ron Debeau leads the points in the Mini Stock division after his win last Saturday night. Tim "Missleman" McPhail, Rex Christensen, Chad Carpenter, and Ben Hutto fill out the top five in the Mini Stock division.
Mark Vandevender holds the points lead for the Open Wheel Modifieds with his win last Saturday night. Jim "Hoot" Flynn, Justin Henderson, John Lidek, and David Hite fill out the top five in points.
Josh Wronkowski is the points leader for the Super Stock division with his win last weekend. This class is always a fan pleaser with plenty of beating and banging going on. Always a very good show for the fans.
Ted Head, Ron Whaley, Charlie Collins and Jeff Colburn fill out the top five in this division.
Bobby Orr, 2002 Mini Stock Champion at Orlando SpeedWorld, took his first ever Late Model feature win last Saturday night and leads the points for the Late Model division. Orr, who will also race the Goodyear Challenge Late Model series this year, plans to not only run for the Late Model Championship at New Smyrna Speedway but also race a selected few Mini Stock races at Orlando SpeedWorld.
Tim Clark, also a Mini Stock Champion, Mark Smith, Dave Green, and Scott Seithar fill out the top five in points for the Late Models.
All divisions will race this weekend at New Smyrna Speedway - Super Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and Strictly Stocks plus the 100 lap Goodyear Challenge Late Model Carquest Road to Charlotte.
