| Thundercross Welcomes CLassic Cars For Speedweeks | By Dave Westerman
For the first time in its history, the Classic Auto Racing Series will hold all of its Speedweek events on dirt at Thundercross Motorsports Complex near Okeechobee this Friday and Saturday.
Despite the fact that several CARS regulars are still prepping their machines for the upcoming season and won't be ready this weekend, including 2002 Champion Jim Rahman of Clermont, a good field is expected... bolstered by a number of drivers from outside the State of Florida.
"The Wild Indian," Daryl Winkler and Martin Graybeal, two dirt track specialists from Westminster, MD have entered the event as have Tennessee hotshots "Rocket" Robbie Sands of Knoxville and Cosby, TN's Brian Ball, who claimed a 2002 CARS win at JAX Raceways in November of last year. Several other "out-of-towners" are also expected.
Heading the Florida contingent will be Frank Conrad of nearby Ft. Pierce, who has plenty of laps on the Thundercross track and will be a favorite to win both nights. Conrad's business, Frank's Sandblasting, is putting up an extra cash award to any driver who can win both nights.
Another Ft. Pierce driver, Wayne Ashton, Bud Spencer of Palm Harbor, and Joey Strehle of Deland, all two-time winners in CARS action in 2002, will be in the field along with 2002 Door Operating Systems Rookie of the Year Patrick "Bam Bam" Sanders of Winter Garden.
Classic Auto Racing Series Race Director Randall Grief says Thundercross was a logical choice for Speedweek 2003 for three reasons. "First, we had a lot of interest from out of state, but most of the calls we received were from guys who like running dirt tracks. Secondly, we're running more dirt track races this year so it will give several of our regular competitors a chance to hone their dirt tracking skills a bit, and third, we open the season right here at Thundercross on March 8th, so the guys can work on their set-up this weekend and be ready to go next month," he said.
The Classic Auto Racing Series will join the Sprints, Mini-Sprints, and Late Models for what should be a highly entertaining show.
