Citrus County Speedway Opens 48th Racing Season | by Larry MacMillan
Inverness, Fla - In an effort to fine tune the racing schedule for the drivers and fans, Promoters Billy Hooker and JimmyWare have put together a variety of programs that should make the 48th season at Citrus County Speedway more exciting than ever. Kicking off the first four weeks, starting next Saturday, February 8th, will be the first leg of a three show series for the TBARA Sprint cars. A number of out of state drivers willbe coming in for this one and the opportunities Speed Weeks offer throughout the state. They will move to New Smyrna Speedway and DeSoto to complete this series. Saturday night's opener will feature heat races and a 35-lap feature for these fast 750 horsepower machines piloted by the pros that make 12 l/2 second runs on this 3/8ths mile circuit. These are the fastest cars ever to appear at Citrus.
TBARA Sprints will make four trips to Citrus this season and another series, the FAST Sprints are scheduled for two appearances. They will be joined by the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks, and Thunder Stocks for a full program of stock car racing. Many of last years drivers will be getting new rides and moving up into different divisions plus some rookie drivers will be taking stock car racing on for the first time.
Week two will feature the Pro Modifieds in the first of four appearances at the fast 3/8th mile racecourse. This will be the first time for the Modifieds at Citrus for seven years. They put on a great race and are very competitive. Add the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Thunder Stocks to the race card and you have another wild night of racing action at the Action Attraction.
Week three will feature the FAST Trucks for the first time at Citrus. The trucks are on the schedule for three races during the season. Some trucks have run with the local Late Model pilots but put a whole gang of these pros together and again you have something for everybody. The regular divisions will also run to round out the show.
The Late Models won't run until March 1st to open their point season and will run on a limited schedule through- out the 2003 season. This will allow them to spend some time with their family or run other specials scheduled around the rest of the state. They are scheduled to run 19 point races out of forty programs scheduled this season. Super Late Models will restart the regular season after the three-week break for the Citrus County Fair with the Sunbelt 125 plus a regular program on March 29th.
The always exciting Figure 8's won't make their first sppearance until April 19th when they go head to head in the famous Citrus County intersection. Citrus will also see the second leg of the Powell Memorial 130, the second leg of the Florida Pro Series and the 2nd leg of the TBARA Sprints in conjunction with Ocala Speedway. Some other specials are still being worked on.
If it is variety you are looking for, Citrus County Speedway will have something for just about everybody in the world of racing plus the regulars in their run for the points crown in the particular division. With two Winter Spectacular races run during the off season and six weeks off to put new cars together or freshen up their old rides, most of these hot shoes should be ready for the season opener on Saturday, February 8th.
