Empire Super Sprint Stars Have Successful First Night at East Bay | TAMPA, Fla - On Wednesday night, January 29th, the Ronald Laney King of the 360 Nationals kicked off with a talent filled 49 car field at the East Bay Raceway Park. The Empire Super Sprints (ESS) were represented with six entrants and had a strong first night outing.
Eight-time ESS champion Mike Woodring, VSM Canadian Invasion Champion Ryan Coniam and two-time ESS feature winner Mike Lutz made the A-Main starting grid. Wood- ring came from the B-Main to place 18th in the final finishing order. Both Coniam and Lutz had early troubles and dropped out for a 25th and 26th place finishes respectively in the 25 lap feature event won by Terry McCarl. Lutz did pick up a heat win with the VanDusen owned #58 beating Central Pa. star Fred Rahmer to the line.
Other drivers on hand were female star Erin Crocker who thrilled the crowd early by timing seventh fastest. Crocker was leading the B-Main until a tangle with a lapped car forced her out of contention for a A-Main starting berth. In the special Goodson Farms Strawberry Dash for non-qualifiers she finishes a close second to World of Outlaws star Paul McMahan. Jeff VanDusen and John Karklin Jr. were also on hand but failed to qualify through the B-Main.
The second night of the 360 Nationals will be held tonight (Jan. 30) with the "ESS Gang" looking to move forward in the standings in hopes of making the start- ing lineup for Saturday's finale.
The ESS season in the Northeast will kick off Saturday night, April 12th at the Black Rock Speedway, it will be the 20th Anniversary Celebration Tour for the 360 touring organization. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
