Five Flags Speedway Releases Schedule for Golden Anniversary Season | Pensacola, Fla - Five Flags Speedway will kick off its' 50th consecutive year of racing with a USAR Hooters ProCup Series 250 lap event on March 15th and close out the golden anniversary season with the 36th edition of the prestigious Snowball Derby, Decmeber 4-7. The 2003 season will also feature the return of weekly Friday night racing after a six-year hiatus, as well as a handful of late model extra-distance events and a June 20th USCS sprint car race. The Southern All Star Asphalt Series will bring its traveling show to the fast half-mile speedplant with late models (May 16th) and trucks (August 8). Wade McNaughton, inhis third year of promoting at the Pine Forest Road oval, feels that the car count has grown enough over the past two seasons to sustain a weekly racing format. The spectator and super stock classes will run every week with the open-wheel modifieds joining the action on a bi-weekly basis. Special events for late models (100 or 150 laps - to be decided) will be held on April 18, May 15, July 18, and September 20th. The September 20th race, as well as the remaining three regular season races, will be switched from Friday to Saturday nights. The May 30th event will mark fifty years of racing at the storied Gulf Coast oval, making it the second oldest track in Florida behind Ocala Speedway, which has operated every year since 1952. The inaugural event at Five Flags on May 31, 1953 is most remembered for a fourteen car pile-up on the first lap of the first feature race. Two weeks later, Herb Thomas won the speedway's only NASCAR Grand National race.
The track was patterned after Darlington Raceway and was heralded as "World's Fastest Half-Mile Track" for three decades. Kalamazoo, Michigan's Randy Sweet turned a 14.01 in l985 for the track's all-time fastest lap. The traditional competition-curtain-call, known as the Snowball Derby, has been the facility's premier event since 1968 drawing many of the nation's top late model drivers.
