JAMES WRIGHT, CHRIS SPRING AND WAYNE CALKINS AMONG SATURDAY WINNERS AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY
|
by Dave Westerman
A very nice crowd of fans were once again treated to some very good racing under near-perfect cool weather conditions Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway.
James Wright III has the 2009 point championship pretty much wrapped up in the Street Stock class but he was not resting on his laurels as Wright thoroughly dominated a nice field of cars for his 12th win of the year.
Wright grabbed the lead at the drop of the green as heat winner Kevin O'Quinn began having troubles, falling back through the field with a smoking car and eventually dropping out of the event. Wright then sped away from the field while the battle for second was intense, eventually going to Dave Colpritt at the checker with Bobby Mobely a close third just ahead of Josh Todd and Kyle Hall. Rounding out the top ten were Jeff Waterman, Larry Braswell, O'Quinn, Ken Lawrence and Joe Dowdy.
Chris Spring also made quick work of the Mini Stock field to notch his sixth win of the year. Spring, who won the second heat, out-ran first heat winner Donnie Guy into turn one, then motored away to claim the victory. Guy kept his car glued to the bottom and held off a host of challengers for second. Fred Harrison, Jr. wound up in third place in front of Eugene Davidson and Kevin Steadman with Sonny Miles, Dwight Ryals, Jordan Spring, Josh Borem and Mike Bruno completing the top ten.
The Figure Eight cars made their final appearance for 2009 and Wayne Calkins wrapped up the point championship with a big win passing Scott Gullett near mid-race and running off with the checker. Gullett held on for second over Jason Rendell, Robbie Powell and Bobby Mobely.
Although Jason Swilley crossed the line first in the Scrambler feature, the win was officially awarded to Matt McCrary since Swilley is a Kids Club driver. Swilley again raced in the class since no other Kids Club cometitors showed to race. Once he officially gets to move up next year, the young Swilley will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.
For McCreary, it was his 11th win of the year. Ashton Hunt was credited with second place ahead of Matt Johns, Jeremy Watts and Richard Brown.
Brian Harbin was a first-time winner in the V-8 Bombers as he won the heat, then led wire to wire to secure the victory over Greg Valdez, Eddie Davis, Matt Bozeman and Delmar Newton.
