SCHROEDER TOPS SPRINTS - ENTIRE V-8 BOMBER FIELD DQ'D ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE
|
by Dave Westerman
It was a fun and festive Halloween night at Auburndale Speedway with plenty of great racing to go with a great costume contest and plenty of candy for the kids at intermission.
The Florida Winged Sprints brought a nice field of cars to the track with Tim George and Paulie Milum grabbing heat race wins.
Mike Schroeder jumped out to a quick lead at the drop of the green for the feature and began setting a torrid pace as Tim George had his hands full with Milum all over his rear nerf bar.
Action came to an abrupt halt when Darrin Miller's engine blew in a ball of flame heading into turn one. As the red flag was displayed, Miller exited his car in OK shape but done for the night.
After a lengthy clean-up, the top three went at it again with Schroeder still at the point. Milum got a little too close to George at one point in turn four knocking the front wing off his car bringing out the caution. Milum continued minus the wing but was never able to pass George for second spot.
Schroeder led green to checker for his second straight win here. George was second with Milum third. Travis Bliemeister ran a steady race for fourth with Frankie Hurst fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Charlie Lee, Skeeter Faulconer, Rebecca George, Tyler Eaton and Darrin Miller.
In an eery Halloween twist, the entire field of V-8 Bombers was disqualified in tech for various infractions including improper wheels, camber etc. James Wright III had led the feature all the way to finish in front of Greg Valdez, Alan Seay, Bobby Mobley and Eddie Davis but all went home with nothing more than a little more "racing experience."
The Mini Cup race was the best of the night once the field actually got under way. Before a lap could be completed, front row starters Bobby Rogers and Jeff Scofield were out with Rogers taking a hard trip into the front stretch wall and Scofield getting a DQ.
Fourteen-year-old Sam Scott would lead the entire distance but not without plenty of pressure. Nine-year-old Tyler Scofield actually passed Scott for the lead on lap 15 but spun in turn two just after making the move. On the restart from that caution, Dale Pulst spun in turn two and was hit head-on by Tanner Ison. Both drivers were unhurt but done for the evening.
Scott continued to set the pace with Harold Crooms now right behind him. Tyler Scofield was back to speed and was challenging Crooms when he drove a bit too deep into turn three and spun himself and Crooms out. Crooms was put back in second while Scofield went to the back of a now-shortened field of cars.
Scott would hang on for the win in his Tony Stewart/Old Spice/Office Depot look-a-like machine with Crooms in second and Tyler Scofield making his way back up to third. Cory White was fourth followed by Shawn Edge. Completing the top ten were Dan Suggs, Stephen Hohlbaugh, Jacob Calloway, David Pollen and Pulst. Heat winners were Jeff Scofield and Bobby Rogers.
Veteran Eugene Davidson got out front early in his Car Doctor sponsored machine and dominated a good field of Mini Stocks which were interrupted just one time for a loose wheel off one car. Point leader Fred Harrison, Jr. took second trailed by Chris Narramore, Sr., Chris Spring and Donnie Guy. Sonny Miles, Dwight Ryals, Bill Bell, Kevin Steadman and Josh Borem rounded out the top ten. Heats were won by Davidson and Bell.
Gerald White, Jr. won the heat then led all the way to claim his second straight Legend Car main topping Justin Brown, Dave Gleason, Rick Wetmore and Gary Verdier.
Jason Rendell out-ran the Modified Mini Stocks taking the feature victory over Chris Zimmerman, heat winner Burt Morse, Donnie Lockard and Danny Dobbins.
Coty Bibeau lost the Bandolero heat race to his dad Mark, but came back to run first in the feature over Danielle Stratton, Cameron White, Mark Bibeau and Derek Sobel.
The heat and feature for the Scramblers were won by Chad Cutting. Matt McCrary came back from heat race problems to finish second in the feature ahead of Matt Johns and Richie Acres.
