Barberville, FL (October 24, 2009) Thirty two Late Models ventured to Volusia Speedway Park for the conclusion of the UDLMCS All Star Late Model Fall Championship. Qualifying laps were run with Adam Bedenbaugh setting fast time with a 17.897 followed by John Kellum with a 17.959, Ivendent Lloyd with a 17.985, Keith Nosbisch with a 18.090 and Shan Smith with a 18.122.
Heat races were run with the top four in each heat guaranteed a spot in the 50 lap feature. The rest of the field was put into a consi race with the top three going into the feature plus a few provisional spots to make up the twenty five car field.
Ivedent Lloyd set on the pole and ran from green to checkered to win the fifty lap event. Lloyd was unpassable as he took the point after every restart with no real challenge from anyone. After a four wide saluate to the fans, it was time to race as Lloyd quickly took the point over Shan Smith, Johnny Collins, John Kellum, and Bo Allen. Jason Davis was the first caution of the night on lap 2 when his machine ended up against the frontstretch wall and done for the night.
Lloyd quickly took the point on the restart however on lap 3, there was a mass pile-up going into turn 1 involving a number of cars. Caught in the pile-up were Jeff Phipps, Lawton Minchew, Darell Padgett, Russell Brown, and Donnie Chappell. Cars that could be repaired were repaired as the safety team went to work on the fluid on the track.
With Collins on the inside, Lloyd on the outside it was another pile-up and the track went red. Involved this time was Shane Williams, Adam Bedenbaugh, Donnie Chappel, Russell Brown, Jason Kimball, Bo Allen, and Gary Spivey. Out of the race was Bedenbaugh, Kimball, Williams, Allen, and Padgett. The twenty five car field was now narrowed down to seventeen cars.
Lloyd once again led the field to the green and took the point followed by Collins, Shan Smith, Jason Fitzgerald, and Tyler Ivey. It continued this way until lap 9 when Shan Smith brought out the caution after he and Fitzgerald made contact while racing and the #17SS was stopped at the top of turns 1 and 2. Smith goes in and does not return.
Lloyd once again takes the point on the green followed by Collins, Fitzgerald, Dillon Wood, and Tyler Ivey. Mark Whitener puts the heat on Ivey and takes over fifth as Ivey goes to sixth on lap 17. One lap later, lap 18, the caution comes out for Gary Spivey who is dead in the water at the top of turns 3 and 4. Spivey takes his machine in, done for the night also.
Fourteen cars are left for the restart as Lloyd leads the way over Collins, Whitener, Wood, and Fitzgerald. Whitener passes Collins for second and Chappell passes Fitzgerald for fifth. Just as the racing is getting really, really hot, the caution comes out on lap 21 for Phillip Cobb who has slowed on the backstretch. Cobb limps his machine to the pits and is also done for the night.
Once again, it is Lloyd on the point over Whitener, Collins, Wood and Richard Ferry on the restart. Wood puts heat on Collins for third but Collins quickly shuts the door. At the halfway point, it is Lloyd, Whitener, Collins, Wood, and Ferry. Lap 26 Fitzgerald comes back to life and is tired of running sixth passing Ferry for fifth and then Wood for fourth. Just as Fitzgerald is getting hot, the caution comes out on lap 30 for Chappell who has spun at the bottom of turn 2 and debris on the track.
From lap 30 to lap 42, there are no cautions as Lloyd leads the way over Fitzgerald, Collins, Ferry and Whitener. Wood takes over fifth passing Whitener as Whitener slides backwards to seventh. As they fight for position, the caution comes out on lap 32 for Jeff Phipps who spun at the bottom of turn 4. With eleven cars left, Lloyd takes the point on the restart followed by Fitzgerald, Collins, Ferry and Wood.
Wood once again puts the heat on as he takes over third and Collins moves to second. Fitzgerald is sliding backwards as he settles into seventh. Top five are Lloyd, Collins, Wood, Ferry, and Russell Brown. Brown passes Ferry and takes over fourth as Ferry settles into fifth. With no more cautions, Lloyd sails to the checkered followed by Johnny Collins, Dillon Wood, Russell Brown and Richard Ferry. Completing the top ten were Tyler Ivey, Jason Fitzgerald, Mark Whitener, John Rankin and Brandon Dewitt.
On November 21 at Hendry County Motorsports Park, the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series will crown their 2009 Champion as they run their last race of the year.
Modified heats were won by Jimmy Carter and Tiny Greene. Street Stocks saw Jim Smith and Bud Chancey top their heat races with Randy Strehle topping the Thunder Stock heat.
Seventeen Modified were in the field for their feature race with Jim Passino on the pole. But it was the 2008 United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series Champion that took the point on the green - Johnny Collins. Following Collins was Jimmy Carter, Passino, Jamie Carter, and Joey Meyers. But it was a short green as Wayne Allen, Jr. brought out the yellow on lap 1 as he spun in turn 1.
With Jimmy Carter on the inside, Collins on the outside, Collins once again takes the point on the green followed by Jimmy Carter, Jamie Carter, Meyers, and Passino. Lap 4 sees the yellow for Tiny Greene and Passino was got together on the frontstretch. Both drivers are fine but done for the night. Jamie Carter on the inside, Collins on the outside for the restart, Collins quickly takes the point again over Jamie Carter, Jimmy Carter, Dale Murray and Kyle Owen. Owen passes Murray and takes over fourth as Murray goes to fifth.
The caution comes out on lap 7 for Wayne Allen, Jr. who has spun on the backstretch. Allen rejoins the field in the rear as Collins once again takes the point over Jamie Carter. But it is a short green as the caution comes back out for Jamie Carter who has spun in turns 1 and 2. Jamie goes to the rear for the restart as his uncle Jimmy Carter takes the inside, Collins the outside for the restart. Collins quickly takes the point again over Jason Davis, Jimmy Carter, Meyers, and Murray.
In the field and coming up is Jared Allison, the 2008 Super Late Model Champion at Orlando SpeedWorld and currently points leader for the 2009 season. Allison, who ran a Mini Stock at Volusia Speedway Park a few months ago, is running his first race in his brand new Modified at Volusia. This is Allison's second race ever on dirt and making his way thru the field.
Lap 8 sees Allen and Mark Buie bring out the caution as they get together on the backstretch. It is now a single file restart as Collins leads the way over Davis, Jimmy Carter, Meyers, and Jamie Carter. The #18 of Allison has now worked his way to seventh in the field. Lap 10 sees the caution again for Hollywood Owen II was has stopped in turns 3 and 4. Owen takes his machine in, done for the night.
Collins once again leads the way over Davis, Jimmy Carter, Jamie Carter, and Murray. Jamie Carter passes uncle Jimmy Carter for third but on lap 18, Jamie Carter and Murray get together in turn 2 at the bottom. It is a green/'white/checkered as Johnny Collins takes his first win in a modified this year at Volusia Speedway Park followed by Jason Davis, Jimmy Carter, Joey Meyers and Jared Allison.
Pat Buckley, another asphalt driver gone to dirt, has the pole for the Street Stock fifteen car field. But before a lap was down the caution came out for Jeff Miller and Bud Chancey who have gotten together at the bottom of turn 1. A complete restart is in order as Buckley once again sits on the pole but it is Mick Kulak who takes the point on the green followed by Buckley, Bubba Christian, Bud Chancey, and Chris Heaney. Bubba challenges Buckley for second and takes it as Buckley settles in third and Phil Brown takes over fifth. By lap 4 it is Bubba Christian, Mick Kulak, Pat Buckley, Bud Chancey and Phil Brown leading the way.
Tim Hughes brings out the caution on lap 5 as he spins at the bottom of turn 2. With Christian on the inside, Kulak on the outside, Kulak takes the point over Christian, Chancey, Trevor Gamble and Phil Brown. But Christian comes back and retakes the point as Kulak must settle for riding in second. Chancey works his way to second followed by Kulak, Gamble, and Brown.
Christian begins to build a 1/4 track lead over the field when the caution comes out on lap 13 for Jeff Miller who has spun in turn 3. It is a single file restart as Christian leads the way over Chancey, Gamble, Kulak and Brown. With no more cautions, Bubba Christian gets the win followed by Bud Chancey, Trevor Gamble, Mick Kulak, and Phil Brown.
Only six Thunder Stocks were in the field for their 10 lap feature with Robert Schrunk on the pole. But on the green, it was Matthew Schell who took the point and led every lap for the win. Only one caution on lap 3 for Wally Douglass and Richard Calmes stopped Schell's march to the checkered. Schell took the checkered followed by Randy Strehle, Robert Schrunk, Richard Calmes, and Wally Douglass.
Next year Matt said in Victory Lane that he may move up to a division to Street Stock but he has enjoyed this year in the Thunder Stocks.
