Bronson Wins the Annual Fall Brawl at Ocala
|
by BJ Cavin ZUBER, FL- Great weather greeted a throng of fans and racers as the Annual Fall Brawl for the Open Wheel Modifieds headlined another great night of racing at the historic Ocala Speedway. But bad weather the previous night had dumped copious amounts of water onto the clay, and that resulted in a rather wet track and a few delays while race cars were rescued from an over saturated infield. But at the same time, as more laps worked in the clay, the track became very racy and provided some spectacular racing action.
The Annual Fall Brawl attracted an extensive field of Modifieds to Ocala Speedway, so it took four heat races and a B main event to set the field. And as the racers prepared to go after the cash the field was led by none other than the legendary Buzzie Reutimann, who took control at the initial green flag and never looked back. Reutimann totally dominated the race, only fighting off a few meager attempts to get past him, but in the end a visit to the tech shed spoiled Reutimann's night.
So with Buzzie Reutimann's first place finish struck down on technical issues, Kyle Bronson was declared the official race winner and received the $1500 cash prize. Bronson had fought his way forward over the course of the race and was happy to get the win. Cody Blair had run right behind Reutimann for a good portion of the race, but was overtaken by Bronson in the waning laps. Following Blair was Devin Dixon in third place, with Gary Sexton finishing fourth and Bruce Harvey wrapping up the top five.
The Hobby Stocks returned to Ocala Speedway and wasted no time in putting on a show. Jody Wells had the early lead but could not hold off Mike Eubanks who seemed to have the car to beat. Eubanks ran strong until his car sputtered on lap 7 and was forced to head off to the pits, which gave the lead to the 55 of Heath Walker. Walker took advantage of the situation and wheeled his car to Victory Lane, grabbing his first win. He was followed by Joe Boyd in second place, then David Miller Jr. in third place.
After dominating the division in 2008 and winning the points championship, many racers were not too happy to see Keith Briggs climb back into a Mini Stock car in 2009. But that is where Briggs has landed and again he is garnering attention as he blasted his way past the field from a dismal starting position and managed a decisive win. Briggs was followed by Sean Babcock in second place, then Greg Bonygne in third place. Buddy Pope ran well and collected a fourth place finish, with Nick Kerr following for fifth place.
Dalton Strehle looked to be in a great position to grab a Gladiator Division win, but Steve Cox had other ideas. Cox grabbed the lead from Strehle early, then held it for the duration of the race in order to notch a win. Dalton Strehle was second, followed by Larry Langston in third place. Stephen Johnson claimed the fourth spot as Paul Hahn grabbed fifth.
Next Friday Ocala Speedway invites all of the kids to bring their bicycles to the track for another round of Kids' Bike Racing! The Late Models will be in town, plus action from the Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators. Ocala Speedway Results for 9/18/09
