Adema tops Sprints at Citrus County
|
The Checkered Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) returned to Citrus County Speedway on Saturday August 29, 2009 with 19 cars to run three heat races and a 30 lap feature race.
Brian Maddox in the 82 had the pole for the start of the first heat race with David Slawiak in the 79 on the outside. The first start was called back for an uneven start. On the second start, the 82 made contact with the 79, driving over the wheels of the car. As the cars bunched up behind them in anticipation of a wreck that didn’t happen, something broke on the 52 car of Joey Aguilar sending him spinning into the infield at turn one and ending his race. The cars lined up again for start number 3, and the leaders made it away cleanly this time but the number 1 car driven by Steven Bradley and the 29 car driven by Gary Gimmler made contact between turns one and two, locking both cars together and bringing out yet another caution. Once the two cars had been separated and fired back up, the field lined up for the fourth attempt at starting the race, now in single file. This time the entire field got away cleanly and Brian Maddox was able to hold off the pack and take the heat win. Ric Voisey had the pole for the start of the second heat race with Scott Adema in the 67 car on the outside. It was Scott that made the better start and took the lead and the heat win. The third heat saw Geoff Styner in the 15jr on the pole alongside Dustin Henderson in the 22 car. However on the start it was the 19 car driven by Keith Butler that came through from a third place starting position to take the race lead and the heat win.
Scott Adema in the 67 car had the pole for the start of the 30 lap feature race, with Brian Maddox in the 82 car on the outside pole. Scott Adema took the early race lead. The first caution of the race was on lap 8 when the 0 car driven by Sonny O’Sullivan spun at turn three. While the 0 was being pushed back off, the 75 driven by Tim Holston pulled into the infield and out of the race. The race got back to green with Adema still in the lead. Tommy Nichols retired the 55 car to the infield on lap 12 with a mechanical issue, followed by the 21A driven by Robbie Hackett on lap 16 and the 0 car of Sonny O’Sullivan on lap 18. The caution flag came out again a few laps later when the 19 car of Keith Butler spun coming out of four. Keith was able to keep the car running but still had to go to the rear of the field as the caution was called for his spin. The final caution of the race came on lap 24 when the 78 car driven by Mickey Kempgens, who was running in third position, spun in turn two after contact with another car. He was pushed back off and had to restart the race from the back of the field. Scott Adema took the feature win, his second consecutive win, also winning the Barfield Clean Sweep Award for winning both his heat race and the feature event. Brian Maddox took second position in the 82 car, followed David Slawiak in the 79, Gary Gimmler in the 29 and with Amanda Ferguson in the 20 car rounding out the top five.
The staff and racers of the CFSS would like to thank everyone for their support and hope to see you at the next race which will be at New Smyrna Speedway on September 5th.
