Larry Brazil Wins the TBARA Feature Race at ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway
|
By Marty Little and Tom Blakeley BRADENTON, Fla. –June 18, 2009. There were strange happenings Saturday night at ASA Sanctioned DeSoto Super Speedway but Larry J. Brazil thought things were just fine as he sped to his first TBARA feature victory of the season in the 30 lap sprint car headliner.
Young Dakotah Stephens set the early pace from his pole position with Brazil hot on his tail as they blasted around DeSoto's banked 3/8 mile oval. There was mad slicing and dicing throughout the 22 car field but a yellow waved on lap 17 for the stalled mount of Dude Teate on the back chute.
The field regrouped with Stephens leading Brazil, Joey Aguilar and Mickey Kempgens. Brazil got past Stephens on lap 18 for the lead and on lap 19 Aguilar made a banzi move under Stephens for second spot and the two touched with Stephens' No. 19 going hard into the outside wall in turn 4. A red flag waved immediately and safety crews rushed to Stephens' demolished racer. The youngster was helped out of his car, shaken but uninjured. Aguilar drew a black flag for rough driving and was finished for the evening.
On the restart Brazil easily kept his mount on the point ahead of Blaze Martin and Kempgens with the action slowed again for a spin by Dustin Perez on lap 22. The field closed once again but Brazil was not to be denied this night as he rocketed ahead of the field again and crossed the stripe first for the checkers over Martin, Kempgens, Troy DeCaire and Shane Butler. David Steele, Wendy Mathis, Ben Fritz, Dave Shotsberger and Tommy Nichols rounded out the top 10 finishers.
Heat race wins fell to Shotsberger, DeCaire and Stephens.

MAGIC 4's The Magic 4 kids were in rare form tonight as Bud the Flagman threw so many yellow flags that he cut the feature laps from 20, down to 15 and then warned that they had three more laps or five minutes. The race did finish and it was one heck of a show as the fans gave a standing ovation to the young drivers. John has called a driver meeting with the Magic 4 drivers for next race to discuss Safety and Rough driving. Safety always comes first and there is concern that the driving is getting rough along with the need to watch and follow the directions of the track officials. One of the main purposes of the class is to teach future racers to drive safely and follow the rules.

FLYIN 4's The Flyin 4 class was an intense battle the entire way. In the end several cars had damage and drivers had hard feelings. Near the end of the race both randy Johnson and Rob Boos were sent to the rear after tangling their cars together. It was exciting for the fans and they showed their enthusiasm with lots of yelling and screaming the whole way. Winning the race was the points leader Alex Patten in the #13 car.

MODIFIED MINIS - 50 It was a rough night for the modified mini class. The evening started with a 9 car field and finished the feature with only a few cars. The two cars that battled for the lead most of the race both broke down and had to go to the pits along with many others. Mike Birk Jr. hung on and drove a great race for the victory in his #10 car. The 35 lap event was a good race and it was fun to watch the father and son team of the Colletti’s duke it out.

PURE STOCKS The Pure Stock class is a fan favorite for sure. The reason is it is great racing week in and week out. Non-stop action from the drop of the green flag and the cars are all so evenly matched that it makes for real excitement. Darren Ellis drove an awesome race and came very close to winning it, but Robert Crisp kept his winning streak in place with the victory.
