Plenty of ACTION at Volusia Speedway Park
|
Barberville, FL (July 11, 2009) General Manager Tonya Moschell proved Saturday night that she is a lady of many talents. Not only did she help get the dirt ready for racing but she also fixed the audio that quit working suddenly Saturday at Volusia. But the Rain Gods were kind and did not drop one little tear of water Saturday night letting the fans and drivers have a great night after a week off for Independence Day last Saturday.
Fans not only got to roll the dice for a 7 or 11 to get in for $7.00 but they also got to Meet and Greet the drivers in all divisions. They saw plenty of action and even a few surprise rollovers where no one was hurt.
Heat races saw Richard Ferry and Ivedent Lloyd top the Late Models; Drew Smith, Steve Shead, and Alan Peacock top the Sportsman; Jason Davis and Jamie Carter top the Modifieds; Grady Christian and Steve Mooers top the Street Stocks; Scott Mooers top the Thunder Stocks, and last but not least Dalton Strehle and Tony Laporta top the 4 Cyl. Challengers. It was now time for the Main Events and fans were ready for more action.
Up first were Street Stocks with Phil Brown on the pole for the 20 lap event but it was Michael Tovet who quickly took the point on the green followed by Grady Christian, Brown, Steve Mooers, and Charlie Macnichol. Mooers quickly passed Brown and took over third. The first caution of the night came out on lap 2 for Italo Deblasi who was temporarily stuck in the dirt going into the pits. Deblasi was pulled out and done for the night.
With Tovet on the inside and Christian on the outside, Christian quickly took the point over Tovet, Macnichol, Mooers and Brown. Tovet and Macnichol did alittle battle for second each taking the spot from the other but in the end it was Tovet in second and looking to challenge Christian for first. Christian shuts the door quickly on Tovet who now finds himself being challenged by Macnichol for second. By lap 6, Macnichol is second, Tovet third and Christian finds himself now challenged by Macnichol for first. Lap 8 sees Christian and Macnichol side-by-side by Christian holds. Tovet again puts the heat on Macnichol, takes over second and puts pressure on Christian for first but Christian holds. Once again Macnichol and Tovet go at it for second with each taking their turn holding the position and challenging Christian for the point. Christian takes the checkered followed by Charlie Macnichol, Michael Tovet, Steve Mooers and Phil Brown.
Ronnie Ponce has the pole for the 20 lap Sportsman event leading from green to checkered. Ponce quickly took the point on the green followed by Steve Shead, Alan Peacock, Shane Williams, and Drew Smith. Shead moves to second as Peacock goes to third but the two do some dancing for the position until Shane Williams puts his two cents into the mill. Williams goes side-by-side with Shead on lap 4 for second and takes it. Running order is Ponce, Williams, Shead, Vogel, Peacock, Stewart, Daugharty, Clegg and Blaize Hetznecker.
The caution comes out on lap 7 for David Clegg who has spun on the bottom of turn 4. Clegg rejoins the field in the rear for the restart. Ponce on the inside, Williams on the outside for the restart but it is a short one as the yellow comes out on lap 8 for David Clegg, Blaise Hetznecker, and Aaron Barsness who have gotten together at the bottom of turn 1. All drivers are good but the same cannot be said of their cars.
Ponce on the inside, Williams on the outside for the restart as Ponce takes the point over Williams, Vogel, Shead and Smith. Williams puts the pressure on Ponce and takes over first for about one second as Ponce comes back and retakes the position. At the halfway point, it is Ponce, Williams, Vogel, Smith, and Peacock leading the way. Lap 13 sees the caution come out for Shaun Daugharty as he spins high in turns 1 and 2. Daugharty rejoins the field in the rear for the restart as Ponce leads the way over Williams, Vogel, Peacock and Smith. Smith gets sideways off 4 but holds on as Shead, Daugharty and Lane get together but all continue on without bringing out the yellow. Coming to the checkered Marc Kinley spins as Ronnie Ponce takes the win over Shane Williams, Danny Vogel, Jr., Alan Peacock and Drew Smith.
Thunder Stocks saw Eddie Tovet on the pole for their feature event as Sean Babcock took the point but it was a wild start as Donnie Nobles gave the fans quite a scare as he gently rolled his Thunder Stock on it's side on the frontstretch. Luckily Nobles was fine but the car, which lost a wheel in the mud, was not. Nobles will have to do alot of cleaning on that one. The spilled fuel was burned off and it was back to racing.
With Babcock on the inside and Scott Mooers on the outside, Mooers took the point over Tovet, Babcock, Matthew Schell, and Richard Calmes . Babcock passes Tovet anetd takes over second. Lap 9 sees Babcock spin at the bottom of 4 and Calmes has problems. Both cars are out. Mooers takes the point on the green followed by the last three remaining cars of Schell, Tovet and Skip Land. Mooers takes the checkered followed by Matthew Schell, Eddie Tovet and Skip Land.
David Clegg was in his own Late Model and had the pole for the 25 lap feature. Clegg quickly took the point on the green followed by Richard Ferry, Joe Kump, Ivedent Lloyd, and Lawton Michew. Kump took over second as Lloyd took over third with Ferry in fourth and Minchew in fifth.
Dave Barber retires on lap 8 as Clegg continues to lead the way over Kump, Lloyd, Ferry and Minchew. Lap 11, as Clegg comes on lap traffic, begins to slow and over heat and is definitely off the pace. Clegg retires to the pits as Stanton Mills brings out the caution on lap 12 for a spin. Restart is nose to tail as new leader Joe Kump leads the way over Lloyd, Ferry, Minchew, and Donnie Chappell. Ferry challenges Lloyd but Lloyd holds. Ferry does not give up and continues to challenge Lloyd but Lloyd holds strong and maintains his second place position.
Joe Kump holds on and takes the checkered for his first feature win in the Late Model division over Ivedent Lloyd, Richard Ferry, Donnie Chappell, and Lawton Minchew.
A little footnote: Howard Stalls had a wild ride in the heat races in the #66 car of Matt Hartley. Stalls flipped three times as he came off the frontstretch. Luckily Stalls was fine but the car will needs alittle work before it runs again. But it was a WILD start to the night.
Modifieds saw one of the best finishes of the year and had the fans on their feet. Dale Murray had the pole for their feature but it was a total restart as Jimmy Carter spun in turns 1 and 2. On the second restart, Murray gets loose as Jason Davis spins to avoid Murray. However the caution is called on Tim Brown so neither Murray or Davis must go to the rear for ther restart.
With James Smith on the inside and Jamie Carter on the outside for the restart, it is Smith who takes the point over Jamie Carter, Murray, Davis and Burkins. By lap 4 it is Smith, Carter, Davis, Murray and Burkins. By lap 7, Carter has passed Smith and taken over the point followed by Smith, Davis, Murray and Burkins.
The caution comes out on lap 12 for Jimmy Carter who has spun in turn 2. On the restart, Burkins gets sideways, Murray gets crossed up and Barry Sheffield and Darron Smith get the worse end as they have no place to go except into each other. All are sent to the rear for the restart although it was obvious that Burkins and Murray were not happy about the situation but they were also involved in the caution.
Jamie Carter holds the point on the restart followed by Davis, Smith, Underwood, and Cody Blair. Nick Kirkus puts his hand into the ring and takes over fifth as Blair settles into seventh. But on lap 13, Blair brings out the caution as he spins at the botom of turn 2. With the new 20 minute time limit to run a feature race, the Modifieds have run out of time and must go for a green, white, checkered.
Carter once again leads the way on the restart but it is just a short restart as a number of car have gotten together in turns 3 and 4. Carter once again takes the point on the second restart followed by Davis, Smith, Kirkus and Underwood. Carter and Davis are racing just about as hard as any two racers can. Coming off turn 4, Davis slides pass Carter and wins by inches as the crowd are on their feet. Jason Davis takes the win over Jamie Carter, James Smith, Nick Kirkus, and Rob Underwood.
C.J. Johnston had the pole for the 4 cylinder Challengers but it was Danny Lunn who quickly took the point followed by Johnston, Tony Laporta, Dalton Strehle, and Gilbert Epsy. Laporta is on the move as he passes Johnston and sets his eyes on Lunn and takes over the point followed by Lunn, Johnston, Epsy, and Strehle. Lap 6 sees Thomas Parker leaking badly and smoking. Parker leaves the track and goes into the pits as Laporta continues to lead the way over Lunn, Johnston, Espy and Strehle. Lap 10 sees Alan Scott go into the pits. Laporta continues to lead the way and takes the checkered over Danny Lunn, C.J. Johnston, Dalton Strehle, and Vinnie Richards.
Next Saturday, July 18, KIDS BOX CAR RACES! 'D' Night - Fans from DeLand, Debary, Deltona and DeLeon Springs admitted free with ID with Late Models, Sportsman, Thunder Stocks, 4 Cylinder Challengers plus Street Stocks $500 to win.
