The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) returned to Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday July 4, 2009 with 16 cars to run two heat races and a 30 lap feature race.
Frank Hurst in the 6F car had the pole for the start of the first feature race with Ric Voisey in the 69 car on the outside car. The 69 took the race lead going into one and two, but on the back straightaway the 6F car came into contact with the 82 car, sending the 6F car rolling down the back straightaway.
The car initially landed on its wheels, but with the throttle open full wide the car took off again and hit the wall at turn three, rolling again until the front wheels became entangled in the fence with the car laying on its side.
The rear wheels continued to burn rubber for a few seconds until the car ran out of gas and emergency workers could reach the vehicle. Frank was unconscious when the car was first reached but regained consciousness shortly after. Frank was taken to Fort Myers trauma center with severe concussion and at the time of writing it is believed that they are holding him overnight for observation. After the track had been cleared and cleaned, the remaining seven cars were pushed back off with Jason Bradford now taking the pole for the complete restart.
This time it was the 19 car of Keith Butler that came from his fifth place starting position to take the lead and the heat win. Frankie Hurst and Skeeter Faulconer were to be in the second heat, but they left with Frank Hurst to accompany him to the hospital leaving six cars in the second heat, with Geoff Styner in the 15JR and Scott Adema in the 67 on the front row for the start of the heat race. Scott Adema got the better start and led the race from start to finish. Geoff Styner in the 15JR had the pole for the start of the feature race with Jason Bradford in the 37 alongside on the front row. As the track went green it was Geoff Styner who took the lead but was only able to keep it for one lap until he was passed by Brian Maddox in the 82 car.
On lap 11, the 19 car of Keith Butler spun between turns three and four after making contact with the 51 car while trying to make a pass, bringing out the caution flag while the dirt was blown back off the track. The race got back to green but only two laps later, the 67 of Scott Adema got locked together with another car and getting free from that car sent him into the wall on the front straightaway, coming to a final stop between turns one and two. The car had to be towed from the track ending his night of racing.
The race got back to green with Brian Maddox still in the lead. With the front 6 cars all running tightly together it was a very exciting race. On lap 27, Stan Butler in the 81 car who had been running in second or third position spun on the front straightaway bringing out the last caution of the race while he was pushed back off but had to join the rear of the field as all of the cars were still on the lead lap.
The race got back underway for a green, white, checkered finish with Brian Maddox in the 82 taking the win, followed by Gary Gimmler in the 29, Keith Butler in the 19, Mark Gimmler in 51 and Dustin Henderson in the 22 car rounded out the top 5.
The staff and racers of the CFSS would like to thank everyone for their support and hope to see you at the next race which will be back at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on August 1st. Checkered Flag Sprint Series Charlotte County Motorsports Park, July 4, 2009
