Joe Boyd wins the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Super Late Model 75 Lap Feature at ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
(June 27, 2009 Bradenton, Florida) It was one of the hottest nights of the year and the racing at ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway was hot too. The latest event of the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Series was one that tested the heart of a man’s soul.
The driving seemed to be some of the toughest and roughest in a long time. There seemed to be no patience on the track as drivers drove up over the hoods of other cars and debris was everywhere. The track seemed to be very-very fast from the start. It also seemed that the yellow flag was waved more often than the green. And the guy that put the series together got a ride in an ambulance to Manatee Memorial Hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken bone in his lower back.
When we saw the #33 car fly air born and directly into the wall we all knew it could be very bad. We saw Steve Dorer get out of the car under his own power and there was a big sigh of relief, but Steve went to the ground and laid there for what seemed like an eternity. He was taken to the hospital and monitored for many hours, then released and taken to his home.
The prognosis is good for a full recovery, but he will be in a lot of pain for a while. Everyone at Desoto Super Speedway wishes Steve Dorer a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him at the track soon. He also deserves a huge Thank You for putting together the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Series for the super late models.
The main event for the Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Series was the 75 lap Feature race. The winner was Tampa’s Joe Boyd in the great looking #5 car. Joe has been racing for over 15 years and started in go karts. He currently is the points leader at another track and came to ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway to be part of this Super Late Model Series.
Veteran Driver Jeff Scofield in the #21 S car took second and was charging hard the entire race. Third place was won by Brad Bischoff in the #53 car. Bischoff was in the race the whole way and came close to taking the lead on a restart, but the green did not drop and he wasn’t able to make the same move on the second restart. There were many cars that did not finish the race and either broke or got damaged and had to pit. Earlier in the evening the Super Late Models ran two heat races.
The first heat race was won by Robert Yoho in the #00 car. Marty Pierce took second in the #75 car. Third place belonged to Steve Dorer in the #33 car.
The second heat race was won by Anthony Campi in the #81 car with Daniel Webster in the #133 car taking second place. Third place was won by Brad Bischoff in the #53 car. This Series will return to ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway in August.
Rockem Sockem Bombers. The Bombers ran one heat race tonight. The heat race was won by John Stewart in the #02 car with Michael Crooks in the #33 car taking second. Third place was won by James Crawford Jr. in the #30 B Pops Thorbin memorial car. The feature race was a 20 lap event that was won by Michael Crooks in the #33 car. John Stewart in the #02 car took second place and third place was won by James Crawford Jr. in the #30 B car. The Bombers put on a great show and the race was very close with lots of side by side racing.
Flyin 4’s. The flyin 4’s ran one heat race which was won by Randy Johnson in the #01 silver bullet car. Rob Boos in the #21 car took second in the heat, and Alex Patten in the #13 car won third place. The feature race was 20 lap race that was a thriller and had the crowd on its feet. The winner of the feature was Rob Boos in the #21 car. Randy Johnson in the #01 car took second and Alex Patten won third place. This is becoming one of the fan’s favorite classes at the speedway. The class continues to improve and grow.
Magic 4’s. The Magic 4’s ran one heat race which was won by Joann Danielson in the #38 car. Joann just started racing half way through last year’s program and has been steadily improving. This was her first win ever! Congratulations to Joann for a fine race and victory. Taking second place in the heat race was Austin Cavey in the #20 car, and third place was won by Brittany Barr in the #81 car. The feature 20 lap race was won by Brittany Barr in the #81 car while Dallas Troyer in the #01 car took second. Winning third place in the feature was Austin Cavey in the #20 car who did a great job of driving after being sent to the rear. The Magic 4 class is a driver development class and it is a thrilling class to watch. The age of the drivers for this class is from 12 to 17 years old.
Modified Mini’s. The Modified Mini class ran one heat race with Brian Dorer in the #97 car winning it. Mike Birk Jr. in the #10 car took second and Chad Rose in the #0 car took third in the heat race. The 50 lap feature race was won by Brian Dorer in the #97 car. Mike Birk Jr. in the #10 car took second and Cad Rose in the #0 car won third. Brian Dorer is a crafty veteran driver that will be hard to beat this year he works long and hard on his car weekly and it shows. Mike Birk Jr. is coming on strong in this division. Mike has been driving for 12 years and has his roots in racing from his go kart days.
Street Stocks. The Street Stock class ran one heat race tonight and then a 20 lap feature race. The racing in this class is intense and close. The cars are so evenly matched that anyone can win on any given night. The heat race was won by Dennis Wilson in the black #42 car. Winning second place was James Nanney in the blue #6 car and third belonged to Derek Lucas in the orange #88 car. The feature race was won by Robert Haygood in the blue #84 car while James Nanney placed second in the #6 car and Dennis Wilson in the #42 car took third place.
