Bobby Baldwin wins the Open Wheel Modified Feature Race at the ASA Sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
May 30, 2009, Bradenton Florida. It was a great night to be at the Super Speedway. The weather was great, the food was scrumptious, and the racing action was awesome. The pits seemed to be unusually busy as the crews were making last minute adjustments and scurrying to make their cars perfect.
The Open Wheel Modified cars seemed to be really dialed in and they all ran very close to each other throughout the night. The winner of the 6 lap heat race for the Open Wheel class was Ralph Bowman in the #2 car. Kyle Bookmiller in the #03 car took second and in third place was Bobby Baldwin in the #4 car. The feature 50 lap race was another story with Bobby Baldwin in the #4 car winning it and taking home $1,000.00 for the win. Taking second place in the feature was Kyle Bookmiller in the #03 car. Winning third place in the feature event was Ralph Bowman in the #2 car. The feature race also saw three yellow flags as the drivers turned up the heat and really put the pedal to the metal, it was a good show.
Rockem Sockem Bombers. It was billed as “The battle of the Pit board Warriors,” as two rivals with lots of history and much talk on the pit boards came face to face on the asphalt oval tonight. Mr. Rick Germony meet Mr. Michael Crooks, ok gentlemen, have at it. For all the talk and the mud-slinging the two really raced a clean tough race and both should be proud to finish the race and be able to load up in one piece. The Bombers had two 6 lap heat races with Michael Crooks in the new #33 car winning one and Randy Spicer in the #83 car winning the other.
The 25 lap feature race was really a good one with the two “pit board warriors” running the 14th lap side by side. A great job of driving took place on the 16th lap with Jerome Watland in the #31 car spinning around 3 times and he kept going to avoid the yellow flag. That driving feat was given a standing ovation by the crowd when Todd Morey the announcer gave Watland special recognition at the victory circle celebration. Winning the feature race was Steve Elder in the #42 car. Taking a close second place was Randy Spicer in the #83 car. Jody Collins in the #32 Orange Crush car took a very respectable 3rd.
Pure Stocks. There were two heat races for the Pure Stocks with Billy Carlbert Jr. in the #47 car winning the first heat race. It was quite a race as the #47 car and the #2 car of Robert Crisp were side by side for the first 3 laps. Richie Shepherd Sr. in the #30A car won the second heat race. The feature 25 lap race was won by Robert Crisp in the #2 car. Richie Shepherd in the #30A car took second place and third place was won by Billy Carlbert Jr. in the #47 car. Robert Crisp collected an additional $100 for the win as he accepted a challenge to go and start in the rear.
Street Stocks. The 6 lap heat race for the Street Stocks was won by Jimmie Best in the #67 car. The 25 lap feature race was won by Dennis Wilson in the #42 car. Derek Lucas in the #88 car took second place while Bubba Thompson in the #75 car won third.
On lap 11 Jonathan Heidenthal in the #27X car was forced into the wall as the #88 car spun out and several other cars had to go high to avoid hitting the #88 car. Heidenthal had to call it a night after the wall incident. It was not exactly the “best” night for the Best Brothers. Both Best cars broke during the feature and neither finished the race. Jimmie Best in the #67 car broke on the 2nd lap and Duane Best in the #3 car broke on lap 17.
Pro trucks. The trucks ran two heat races tonight and Charlie Montgomery in the #12 truck won the first heat race. Michael Smith in the #23 truck won the second heat race. The feature race was a thriller with a field of 14 trucks and Brent Huber in the #64 truck winning his first ever truck race at Desoto Super Speedway. Taking a close second place was Michael Smith in the #23 truck. Third place was won by Charlie Montgomery in the #12 truck.
Next Saturday June 6th the TBARA real sprint cars come to Desoto Super Speedway and invade the asphalt oval. David Steele just back from winning the Little 500 in Indiana will be rockin the house along with his sprint car buddies. If you like speed you will love these real sprint cars as they reach speeds over 100 mph. Gates open at 5 PM with the racing action beginning at 7 PM sharp.
