|
Barberville, FL (May 10, 2009) In spite of the full moon shining overhead, almost 100 cars packed the pits at Volusia Speedway Park last night. Thirty cars came for the 30 lap $1000 to win Sportsman race with the winner winning on the last lap by about 2 inches. The night was full of excitement and some great short track racing.
With 30 cars in the field for the Sportsman feature, a B Main was run with eight cars in it. The top four would transfer to the A Main. Josh Byrd had the pole but before a lap was on the books, four cars got together calling for a complete restart. On the second start, Byrd quickly took the point over Shaun Daugharty, Matt McGillivray, Timothy Miller, and Collin Wright. The caution came out on lap 6 for Marc Kinley who spun on the frontstretch outside wall. Kinley quickly takes his car to the pits for crew attention and returns to the field for the restart in the rear. On the restart, it is Daugharty on the inside and Byrd on the outside but a yellow was thrown for a bad start. On the second restart, Byrd quickly took the point over Daugharty, McGillivray, Corey Holley and Miller. Byrd took the checkered over Shaun Daugharty, Matt McGillivray, and Corey Holley. With his win, Byrd was locked into the A Main along with Daugharty, McGillivray, and Holley.
Street Stocks saw Grady Christian win their 20 lap feature for his eighth win this season. Mick Kulak had the pole for the feature but it was Bruce Birkitt who grabbed the point over Grady Christian, Bubba Christian, Michael Tovet, and Phillip Brown. Lap 4 sees the caution come out for Bubba Christian as he limps his car into the pits and comes back out for the restart in the rear. With Grady on the inside and Birkitt on the outside for the restart, Birkitt once again takes the point over Grady Christian, Tovet, Brown, and Charlie Macnichol. But the yellow comes out once again for George Richards who has spun in turn 4. Richards is fine and rejoins the field in the rear for the restart.
With Grady on the inside and Birkitt on the outside for the restart, Birkitt once again gets the jump on Grady and takes the point followed by Grady, Brown, Steve Mooers, and Tovet. Lap 5 Grady looks to pass Birkitt but Birkitt quickly shuts the door. But by lap 7, Grady takes the point followed by Birkitt, Brown, Tovet, and Macnichol. D.J. Nobles has problems and takes his car into the pits, done for the night. Lap 9 sees Pat Buckley with problems. Buckley tries to get to the pits but is hit by Randy Moody and ends up in the wall right where you enter the pits on turn 4. Buckley and Moody are fine but done for the night.
Birkitt on the inside, Grady on the outside, the green comes back out as Grady quickly takes the point over Brown, Birkitt, Macnichol and Tovet. Lap 13 sees top runner Tovet slow dramatically and come to a stop on top of turn 2. The yellow is thrown for Tovet as he sees his good night end early in the pits. With the race halfway completed, it is a single file restart as Grady once again leads the field followed by Brown, Macnichol, Birkitt, and Mooers. Lap 17 sees Macnichol in second as Brown goes to fourth. Bubba Christian makes his move and takes over fifth as Birkitt slides to sixth. Grady Christian takes the checkered for his eighth win followed by Charlie Macnichol, Steve Mooers, Phillip Brown, and Bubba Christian. Heat wins went to Michael Tovet and Grady Christian.
Five Sportsman ran the special "Sportsman DIRT Dash" for five laps. Shane Williams was the lucky pole winner. On the green, Williams took the point over Steve Shead, Ken Hall, Sr., Bobby Richardson and Drew Smith. With no cautions, it was truly a run for the cash which was $500 to the winner. Hall put heat on Shead and took over second as Shane Williams won followed by Ken Hall, Sr., Steve Shead, Bobby Richardson, and Drew Smith.
Up next was the 20 lap Modified feature with James Smith on the pole. Smith quickly took the point over Cory Hupp, Jason Davis, Rob Underwood, and Larry Mott. Davis passes Hupp for second as Underwood followed for third, Mott fourth, and Hupp fifth. Davis now sets his eyes on Smith taking over the number one postion with Underwood second followed by Smith, Dale Murray, and Larry Burkins.
The dreaded red flag comes out on lap 5 as Hupp, Donnie Padgett, Alan Thomas and Jimmy Carter have all gotten together on the frontstretch. Padgett hit Carter and basically caused a mass reaction. All drivers are fine but done for the night. The track is cleared quickly and the green comes back out as Underwood is on the inside and Davis on the outside for the restart.
Davis quickly takes the point over Underwood, Murray, Smith and Jamie Carter who is driving Jimmy Carter's car and Jimmy is in the 8 backup car of Rick Scott. Jamie Carter puts the heat on Smith and takes over fourth as Smith goes to fifth. Davis and Underwood have left the field as they are far ahead on lap 8. By lap 9, Underwood and Davis are side-by-side for the point but Davis holds strong and keeps Underwood second. It is Davis, Underwood, Murray, Jamie Carter, Smith, Burkins, Ronnie Chance, Nick Kirkus, Mark Padgett, Larry Mott, and Charlie Macnichol.
Lap 12 sees the caution come out for a wild tire that has escaped off Mark Padgett's car. At the same time, Davis has spun in turns 1 and 2 by a lap car. Padgett is towed off the track as Davis is given back his spot since the leader is protected. With 12 cars left on the single file restart, Davis once again takes the point over Underwood, Murray, Jamie Carter, and Burkins.
Racing is now getting hot and heavy as Macnichol and Mott get together. Mott does a fantastic job of catching his very squirelly car with no caution having to come out. Underwood takes over the point on lap 13 followed by Davis, Murray, Jamie Carter, and Burkins. Lap 15 sees Nick Kirkus takes his #410 into the pits. All the sudden Davis slows. Murray, Jamie Carter, and Burkins get together in turn 4 but all are fine and roll away. Davis has a right front tire down and quickly pits for a tire as Kirkus returns to the field in the rear along with Davis.
Twelve cars are left on the restart on lap 17 as Underwood takes the point followed by Murray, Jamie Carter, Burkins and McNichol. Lap 18 sees Jamie Carter off the pace as he goes into the pits along with Davis. Underwood takes the checkered for his second win in a row celebrating in Victory Lane with his mom. Underwood is followed by Dale Murray, Larry Burkins, Larry Mott, and Charlie Macnichol. Heat winners were Rob Underwood, Jason Davis, and Larry Mott.
It was a small field for the $500 to win Mini Stock fifteen lap feature. Nine cars were in the field with Ron Adams on the pole. But it was Sean Babcock who took the point over Stanton Mills, Dan Kerr, Adams, and Nick Kerr. Stanton Mills quickly passed Babcock taking over the point. Dan Kerr puts pressure on Babcock and takes over second as Babcock goes to third followed by Nick Kerr and Danny Vogel, Jr.
Nick Kerr and Danny Vogel waste no time passing Babcock for third and fourth as Babcock goes to fifth followed by Adams, Mark Taylor, Lance Lee, and Rodney Alexander. By lap 9, Mills has built a 20 car lead over the field. But on lap 10, the red flag comes out as Mills has fire under the hood in his machine. Mills is unharmed but the car is done for the night.
With Mills in the pits, the new leader is Nick Kerr who quickly takes the point over Danny Vogel, Adams, Taylor and Babcock on the restart. Babcock passes Taylor for fourth as Taylor goes to fifth. Once again the leader builds up a huge lead over the field and takes the checkered over Danny Vogel, Jr., Ron Adams, Sean Babcock, and Mark Taylor. Nick Kerr is a two time Champion in the Mini Stock division at Volusia Speedway Park. Nick Kerr won the heat race.
It was now time for the main event of the night, the 30 lap Sportsman race. Mike Haney had the pole and took the point over Bobby Richardson, Ken Hall, Sr., Drew Smith, and Shane Williams on the green. But it took no time for Hall, Sr. to pass Haney as he took the point followed by Haney, Williams, Drew Smith, and Richardson. Williams put the heat on Haney taking over second as Shane Nichols passes Richardson for fifth.
Lap 3 sees the first to leave the field, Paul Shead. Hall continues to lead the way over Williams, Nichols, Haney and Smith as the caution comes out on lap 5 for Levi Cribbs who has spun in turn 2. Cribbs is fine and rejoins the field in the rear for the restart.
With Williams on the outside and Hall on the inside, the green comes back out as Williams takes the point over Hall, Nichols, Haney and Smith. But it is a short green as the yellow comes out on lap 6 for Bobby Richardson who has spun in turn 4. At the same time, Daugharty runs into Steve Branton. Daugharty takes his machine into the pits with alot of sheet metal damage and does not return for the night. Branton goes to the rear for the restart as Danny Vogel, Jr. is pushed into the pits, done for the night.
Williams on the inside, Hall on the outside as the race goes back to green. But it is a short green as Aaron Barsness brings out the yellow for a spin in turns 1 and 2. The field is realigned as Barsness goes to the rear for the start. Williams takes the point on the green followed by Hall, Jr., Shane Nichols, David Clegg, and Haney. Drew Smith passes Haney and takes over fifth but the caution comes out again on lap 9 for Todd Ponce who has spun in turn 2. Ponce takes his machine to the pits and returns to the field later.
It is now a single file restart but it takes three tries before the green comes back out since everyone is trying to do a double file restart. But the third time was a charm as Williams takes the point over Hall, Clegg, Nichols, and Smith. Lap 11 sees Ken Hall, Jr. retire to the pits. Lap 15 sees Byrd pass Alan Peacock for eighth. Top ten are Williams, Hall, Clegg, Nichols, Smith, Stewart, Haney, Byrd, Peacock, and Richardson. Lap 18 sees the yellow once again as Matt McGillivray is stopped on the top of turns 3 and 4 and Byrd has a wild tire. Drew Smith quickly takes his machine in for a fast pit stop and returns to the field in the rear for the restart. Williams once again takes the point on the green followed by Hall, Clegg, Nichols and Stewart. By lap 25, Clegg passes Hall and takes over second as Hall goes to third followed by Nichols and Stewart. The caution comes out on lap 27 for Kevin Davis who has spun at the bottom of turn 2. Davis goes in for the night.
Sixteen cars are now left for the three lap shootout. Williams once again takes the point on the green followed by Hall, Clegg, Nichols and Stewart. Clegg passes Hall for second just as the caution comes out for Bobby Richardson who has spun on the backstretch and ended up in the back pit gate entrance. Richardson is pushed into the pits and done. Two laps to go as Williams leads on the restart but the caution comes out once again for Shane Nichols who has slowed on the backstretch with a blown motor. Oil is covering the backstretch as Haney spins in the oil. Since Haney did not bring out the caution but Richardson did, Haney gets his spot back for the restart.
Now there are 14 cars left for 2 laps as Williams once again takes the point on the restart followed by Clegg, Hall, Haney, and Corey Holley. Williams and Clegg go side-by-side for the point and just as they are coming to the checkered, Williams gets loose and Clegg wins by just two inches. Clegg takes home the $1000 followed by Shane Williams, Ken Hall, Sr., Corey Holley and Mike Haney.
Shane Williams, Drew Smith, Ken Hall, Sr. and Bobby Richardson took the heat wins.
Danny Lunn had the pole for the 15 lap 4 Cyl Challengers feature. Lunn quickly took the point on the green over Dalton Strehle, RJ Glaser, Tony Laporta, and Gilbert Epsy. Laporta is on the move and takes over third then second. Deidra Fontaine brings out the caution on lap 3 as she spins at the bottom of turn 4. Fontaine rejoins the field in the rear for the restart as Lunn is on the inside and Laporta on the outside. Laporta takes the point followed by Lunn, Strehle, Espy, and Vinnie Richards. The yellow comes out once again on lap 6 for Vinnie Richards who spun in turn 2. Laporta takes the point on the restart but it is another short restart as the yellow comes out for Davey Wolf who is stopped at the bottom of turns 1 and 2. Wolf rejoins the field in the rear.
Single file restart as Laporta leads the way over Strehle, Lunn, Espy, and Glaser. Lap 10 sees the yellow for Brian Smith who has spun on the backstretch. Leonard Underwood, Jr. takes his ride to the pits, done for the night.
With no more cautions, Laporta leads the way over Strehle, Lunn, Espy and Glaser. Strehle gives it his best to pass Laporta but Laporta holds and takes the checkered followed by Dalton Strehle, Danny Lunn, Gilbert Espy, and RJ Glaser. Tony Laporta and Vinnie Richards took the heat wins.
Volusia Speedway Park will be off next Saturday, May 16th, but will return May 23rd with Remembering Our Heroes as Military, Law Enforcement, Fire/Rescue are admitted FREE with ID. featuring Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stock, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cyl. Challengers.
