Jeff Scofield Back in the News, Wins Hoosier Elite Series Race
by Tom Blakeley
May 9, 2009 Bradenton Florida. If short track racing action is what you were looking for, you got more than your monies worth tonight at the ASA sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway. It was a pretty good crowd considering that the entire short track world now has NASCAR to compete with on Saturday Night for the stockcar fans attention.
Twenty two Super Late Model teams invaded the track and twenty one cars ended up starting the Feature 75 lap event of the evening. The list of drivers is like as who’s who of Super Late Model racing. Names like Jeff Scofield, Joe Boyd, Anthony Campi, Wayne Jefferson, Richie Anderson, Scott Holly, Robert Yoho, Marty Pierce, and Steve Dorer just to name a few.
Norbert Goestl in the #6 car fly’s back and forth from Germany to race in this series. The Super Late Models started the evening by running three 6 lap heat races to position for the feature race of 75 laps. Jeff Scofield in his new #21-S car won the first heat race with John Jackson in the 1X car taking second and Wayne Jefferson in the #99 car taking third.
The second heat race was won by young gun Anthony Campi in the #81 car. Taking second place was Marty Pierce in the #75 car and third was won by veteran driver Robert “Showtime” Yoho in the #00 car.
The third heat race was won by Steve Dorer in the #33 car while Richie Anderson in the #51 car took second and third place belonged to James Carter in the 21X car.
The heat races looked to be smoking fast and the drivers did some great aggressive driving. Just prior to intermission the late models took to the track once more for a 6 lap Dash for Cash race with $200 going to Jeff Scofield for the win and $100 going to Steve Dorer for second place. Richie Anderson and Anthony Campi each got $50 for third and fourth.
The cash always seems to help have the drivers push the action up a notch. The Dash for Cash was fun to watch and everyone cheered for their favorite driver to win the money.
The 75 lap feature race was one of the most action packed races to hit ASA sanctioned Desoto Super Speedway in a long time. There were numerous yellow flags and two red flags after a couple of spectacular wrecks.
The action started early and continued throughout the entire race. At the first lap on the back stretch Robert Yoho and Wayne Jefferson got into each other and the first yellow flag came out and set the tone for the race with a complete restart. Ten laps into the race a violent crash occurred on the front stretch as Scott Holley in the #1 car and young Matthew Cohen in the #46 car collided and then hit the wall very hard and climbed up and onto the fence.
The #46 car was demolished and about 40 feet of the retainer fence will have to be replaced. The second red flag occurred when Attorney driver James Carter in the 21 X car and Mark Childress in the #54 car collided on the front stretch and Carter rolled onto his roof and slid all the way into turn 1 and 2. The great thing was that all the drivers were fine and able to get out of their cars and walk away.
The winner of the feature race was Jeff Scofield in the #21 S car. Joe Boyd in the #5 car took second place and third place was won by Anthony Campi in the #81 car. Campi and Marty Pierce in the #75 car really battled their way through the entire race and it was a very close finish for the 3rd and 4th spots.
The Racecar Engineering Hoosier Elite Series has many wonderful sponsors. The drivers and fans would like to thank Southern Racing Fuel, Basset Wheels, E Z Up Tents, Longacre, Wilwood, FLF Chassis, Advanced Racing Shocks, Butler Built, Quickcar, Allstar, Sweet Parts of Florida, Joe’s, Simpson, Racecar Engineering, Ricky Saunders Pit Equipment, Winters Performance, Ringer Gloves, Howe, Five Star Bodies, and ARP Bodies.
Pure Stocks. This really competitive division ran two 6 lap heat races. The first heat race was won by Troy Thiem in the #18 car. The second heat race was won by Dave Davis in the #6 car. The 25 lap feature race was won by Robert Crisp in the #2 car with Billy Carlbert Jr. in the #47 car taking second. Third place was won by Richie Shepherd in the #30A car. This was a really good and intense race that unfortunately included the two heat winners breaking down and not finishing the race.
Open Wheel Modifieds. The Open Wheel Modified class ran one heat race and then a 25 lap feature race. The heat race was won by Bobby Baldwin in the #4 car. The feature race was won by John Sarppraicone Jr. in Bill Davis’s #15 car. Bobby Baldwin in the #4 car took second and Ralph Bowman in the #2 car took third place. The car count for the open wheel modified class continues to be low as this class seems to be one of the hardest hit by the economy.
Magic 4’s. The Magic 4 class hit the small oval with impact and intensity tonight. The Magic’s ran one 6 lap heat race and the 20 lap feature race. The heat race was won by Austin Cavey in the #20 car. The feature race was won by Mark Bartimac in the #21 car after he had received a warning from the officials about rough driving. Taking second place was rookie Dallas Troyer in the #01 car and third place belong to Brittany Barr in the #81 car. Barr drove through the field as she started in the rear and drove a great race.
Rockem - Sockem Bombers. After losing several cars last week to accidents and blown engines the field of bombers was small tonight. The Bombers drove one 6 lap heat race which was won by Michael Crooks in the #33 car. The feature race was a good race with four cars running in a close pack and with only two laps left in the race Todd Jacobs in the #44 car blew his engine and spun out and caught fire. The race finished with Steve Elder in the #42 car winning the feature race. Jody Collins in the #32C car took second and Michael crooks was third in his #33 car.
Flyin 4’s. The fastest growing division to hit the track in many years is the Flyin 4’s. They all seem to have fun and love racing on the big oval. The Flyin 4’s ran two 6 lap heat races. The first heat race was won by Rob Boos in the #21 B car and the second heat race winner was Randy Johnson in the #01 car. The 20 lap feature race was won by Rob Boos in the #21 car. Coming in second was Jessica Ostrovskis in the #91 pink rocket. Guess who was right on Jessica’s bumper?? Yes the two were at it again. Mr. Alex Patten was third and right next to Jessica. The rivalry is alive and well and we look forward to more close racing from these two young guns.
