Keith Butler tops Checker Flag Sprint Series at Citrus
|
The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) made their first visit of 2009 to Citrus County Speedway on Saturday April 25, 2009 with 18 cars to run three heat races and a 30 lap feature race.
Keith Butler in the 19 car won the first heat from starting in second position after the 5s of Stephen Sinwald chose to go to the rear for the start of the race. Dustin Henderson claimed the win for heat number two and David Slawiak took the third heat win, with both cars starting from the pole position and leading their heat race from start to finish.
David Slawiak had the pole for the start of the feature race in the 79 car with the 37 car of Jason Bradford alongside. David got off to a great start and took the lead, pulling away from the rest of the field as a battle took place for second place between the 22 of Dustin Henderson, the 67 of Scott Adema and the 19 of Keith Butler. The 6X of Skeeter Faulconer pulled into the infield on lap 7. David continued to lead the race in the 79 car and had built up a lead of several car lengths when coming out of turn 4 on lap 9, the car slowed and veered down towards the low side of the track giving Keith Butler in the 19 car the chance to take the lead. As we found out after the race, the steering wheel had came off the 79 in David’s hands, however he was able to get the steering wheel back on the car before reaching turn one and continued right on with the race, without the caution flag ever having to come out. Some great racing followed with several closely fought positions and lapped traffic. The 6F driven by Frank Hurst pulled off on lap 28, and as Keith Butler took the checkered flag to claim the win, the 29 of Gary Gimmler spun between turns three and four after making contact with another car but the race was already over. Keith Butler made it four wins in a row and also took the Barfield’s Clean Sweep Award for winning both his heat race and the feature race. Scott Adema in the 67 car finished in second place, followed by the 79 of David Slawiak, the 51 of Mark Gimmler. The 5W driven by Stan Butler finished out the top 5 in this race that ran without a single caution.
The staff and racers of the CFSS would like to thank everyone for their support and hope to see you next week at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on May 2nd.
