Jeff Choquette tops Super Lates at Orlando SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
It was an unseasonably cool Friday night at Orlando Speedworld, but the drivers turned up the heat to give the fans some great racing. The Super Late Models were back in action and put on quite a show. Mark Emberson led the opening three laps of the 35 lapper but tangled with Dusty Cornelius with both going to the rear of the field. Rusty Ebersole led on the restart but was quickly passed by Jared Allison. On lap five it was Mark Adams getting into the turn one wall four caution number two.
On the restart, Jeff Choquette, driving an ASA-legal car for Fountain Motorsports, was already up to second after starting seventh. Only a lap could be completed before Emberson and Cornelius tangled again with Emberson taking his car to the pits.
It became a two man show at this point with Allison and Choquette going at it tooth and nail for the top spot. Choquette tried every move possible and finally made it stick on lap 20 just before Cornelius spun again on lap 21 for caution number four. Cornelius was black-flagged at this point for causing three yellow flags, however he opted to stay on the track even though he was not being scored.
Allison, having the chance to cool his tires, nearly got back by Choquette on the restart, but the Okeechobee driver held his ground despite two more caution periods for spins by David Myer and Cory Kaiser late in the going.
Choquette took the win with Allison second. Jason Vail hopped in the Murphy Motorsports car slated for Jessica Murphy to drive after his own car dropped a valve in hot laps. After starting in the last row, Vail drove a steady race to finish third in the unfamiliar machine. Ebersole held on for fourth while Kaiser recovered from his late spin to get fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Myer, Bobby Orr, Cornelius, Shaughn McCormick and Emberson.
Ben Kennedy took a wire to wire victory in the Taylor Racing Products Pro Trucks. Starting from the outside pole, Kennedy had a fairly easy time of it in scoring his first career win at Speedworld. Just two yellow caution periods slowed Kennedy's pace as he took the win over Scott Reeves, Tim Sozio, Doug Samion and Anthony Sergi. Charlie MacNichol, Chad Pierce, Derrick Reeves, Cody Blair and Whitney Poole completed the top ten.
Billy Cuddy has been working on the handling of his Chevy Monte Carlo and he had the car on rails to grab his third Super Stock win of the year. Justin Reynolds led the first three trips around the speedway but Cuddy was flying and set the pace the rest of the way slowed only by a couple of cautions for minor spins.
Point leader David Gould started ninth but methodically worked his way to second by race's end while Reynolds held on for third with Bobby Cuddy and Jim Erb fourth and fifth. The rest of the top ten consisted of Brent Tyler, Cody Keeler, Denny Johns, Joe Bandur and John Bennett.
Cody Blair ran to an uncontested win in the Mini Stock feature, starting from the pole and leading every lap to break the win streak of the Allison family. Pedie Allison would have to settle for second on this night ahead of David Russell, Jim Erb, Rob Reynolds, Rex "Boneman" Hollinger, Steve Wagner, Dyan Curtis and Kelly Jarrett. The Strictly Stocks saved the best for last as the race came down to a photo finish for both first and third places.
William Hindman was leading handily but his car began to overheat with three laps remaining. That allowed Jessie Cuddy to catch up and grab the win at the stripe for her first career triumph in the class. Allen McClelland just nipped Tim Walters, Jr. at the line for third while Neal Kirby took fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Bomber Bill Loomis, Bruce Gayton, Dan Binda, Harold Erb and Shane Smith.
