Punta Gorda, FL...The Checkered Flag Sprint Car Series returned to CCMP for another great show. Scott Adema started on the pole for the first heat race for the Sprints and was able to hold off Keith Butler for the 8 lap heat.
For the second heat race Mark Gimmler sat on the pole and led the entire 8 lap and caution free heat race. Jason Bradford led the twelve car field around to the green for the lap feature event, with the caution coming out right after the start of the race. Something had happened to Randy Woodwall's car and slowed causing a multi-car wreck, which collected David Slawiak and Geoff Styner.
On the restart of the race Mark Gimmler and Dustin Henderson got tangled up together in turn one causing another restart. The third attempt to start the race was good and Scott Adema jumped out front with Keith Bulter hot on his heels. Randy Woodwall brought out the first race caution when his car went head-on to the back stretch wall just as you come out of turn two. Woodwall was ok, but the car was not and ended his night. When the race got restarted Scott Adema was still leading the race until lap twenty when Keith Butler nudged Adema out of the way for the lead.
Once Keith Butler got out front no one could catch him. Keith Butler went on to win his third race of the season for the Checkered Flag Sprints. Scott Adema finished in second with Mark Gimmler in third.
Reese Chase started on the pole for the twelve lap Bandolero feature. On the start of the race Mark Hooven jumped to the lead . The only caution to come out was on lap five when polesitter Reese Chase spun out by himself in turn two. Mark Hooven led the entire feature and beat out his brother Shawn Hooven, who had
Drafting Karts had Jason Gallini on the pole for the fifteen lap feature with Kelli Burns jumping out to the lead at the start of the race. Burns, JD Cordon and Jason Gallini battled for the lead for the entire race. Ultimately Jason Gallini took the victory with JD Cordon and Kelli Burns finish in a close second and third.
Jamie Barnum sat on the pole position for the twenty lap TQ Midget feature event, but Barnum did not stay their long. Mike Belusar passed Barnum at the start of the race and never looked back. On lap two Ray Smith lost control of his car and spun out in turn two and was able to continue. Belusar had no one challenge him for the top spot and went on to win the feature. Jack Duffy came in second while polesitter Jamie Barnum was third.
Codey Benoit was the polesitter for the Pro 4, twenty five lap feature and took the lead on the start of the feature. The first caution came out on lap two, when Derrick Horton tried to make it three wide and causing a multi-car pileup. Bruce Gertes back bumper became lose on lap seven bringing out the next caution with Benoit still leading. The final caution came out when John Pummel Jr's car came to a stop in turn four on lap eighteen. Codey Benoit held the lead for the entire race with Kevin Underwood challenging Benoit for the victory on the last lap, however Underwood's attempted last lap pass was unsuccessful with Codey Benoit taking the win. Kevin Underwood came home second and Bruce Gertes rallied back to finish third.
The Legend cars were next for their twenty five lap feature with Devin McLeod leading them to the green flag. Josh Williams grabbed the lead from McLeod once the green flag waved. On lap four Zack Napleon spun out on the top of turn two, bringing out the first caution. Brady Marshall brought out the next caution on lap fifteen when he went spinning in turn four. Lap eighteen saw Zack Napleon spinning out again, this time in turn one. On the restart of lap eighteen Devin McLeod, who was running in second got into the leader Josh Williams causing the back bumper to come off of Williams car bring out the last caution. Josh Williams was the winner with Devin McLeod and Gerald Campbell completing the top three.
Billy Gise was the polesitter for the twentyfive lap Dwarf car race. Gise led the first six laps before Jeff Ripley challenged Gise for the lead and the two cars made contact in turn four. After the contact Billy Gise's car went spinning in turn four, which brought out the only caution. Gise was sent to the rear of the field while Jeff Ripley was given the lead. Jeff Ripley went on to win the feature event for the Dwarf cars with Mike Belasur coming in second and Andy Pryor was third.
Fastrucks came out on the track for their fifty lap feature with Mike Smith leading the trucks to the start of the race. Smith led the first lap, but Andrew Gipson got around Smith for the lead by lap two. Lap two also seen the first caution for the Fastrucks, when Jessica Green lost control of her truck and spun out in turn three. Andrew Gipson led race until lap ten when Ross Chastain got around Gipson for the top spot.
On lap twenty Andrew Gipson and Josh Williams were battling for the third spot when the two got bumper locked and broguth out the second caution of the race. Both Andrew Gipson and Josh Williams were sent to the rear of the field once the bumpers got unhooked. TJ Duke took over the lead from Ross Chastain on lap thirty six and went on to win his first Fastruck race for the 2009 season. Ross Chastain finished second and Josh Williams stormed through the field to come back and finish third.
Don Jericka was the polesitter for the twenty five lap Junior's Trim Shop Road Warriors. Jericka would lead the first lap, but coming to the second lap Jericka and Logan Leonard got tangled up. The two cars got together before the flagstand and Don Jericka's car ended up hitting the front straightaway wall and ended his evening. Logan Leonard had to take his car to the pits for some minor repairs, but was back out before the restart of the race. Jeff Firestine was given the lead on the restart of the race with Chris Loney and Billy Benoit racing each other hard behind Firestine.
On lap four Chris Loney and Billy Benoit became bumper locked which resulted in another caution. Both Loney and Benoit had to restart at the tail of the field. Jeff Firestine went on to win the feature race with Chris Scott finishing third and Chris Loney came back for the rear of the field to finish third.
The Fab 4's went caution free for their twenty lap race with Dan Ohleyer on the pole. Ohleyer led the first three laps before Johnny Balzarano got around Ohleyer for the lead. Johnny Balzarano and Jeremy Perkins battled for the lead for several of laps.
At the checkered it was Johnny Balzarano that took home the victory and Jeremy Perkins had to settle for second with Mark Davis taking third.
The last race of the evening were the Thunder Trucks with Andy Pryor leading the trucks to the green for the fifteen lap feature. At the start of the race Andy Pryor took the lead with his dad, Tom Pryor locked on to his bumper for the entire caution free race. Andy was able to hold his dad, Tom off to capture the win. Tom Pryor and Mike Bilacki completed the top three.
