Jared Allison Doubles in Super Late and Mini Stock Wins at Orlando SpeedWorld
|
by Dave Westerman
Orlando Speedworld started off the month of April with some great racing that saw Cocoa's Jared Allison score a pair of victories. The wins just made Allison's week even better as he had just found out that he is going to be a father for the first time. Congratulations to Jared and Dee on the good news!
Allison didn't have the fastest car in the 35 lap headliner for the Super Late Models, but he was in the right place at the right time to score the win.
Brian Finney had the pole position and jumped out to an early lead. Things ran pretty much nose to tail until a lap 13 restart after David Myer's back stretch spin. The double-file restarts being used in 2009 quickly changed the complexion of the race as Jason Vail blasted by Dusty Cornelius for second bringing Allison with him. Cornelius lost the handle and quickly back-slid to fifth.
Finney now had a rear-view full of Vail but every time Vail could get a good run, the caution flag would be out yet again, all for minor spins. On lap 32 though it was Finney and Vail bringing out the yellow as they tangled in turn one. Both drivers were sent to the rear of the restart line-up.
Allison now had the point, and despite minor right side damage received when he clipped Finney's car, led the rest of the way despite a final caution for Rusty Ebersole who had tagged the wall after tangling with Cornelius on the white flag lap. Allison held his ground in the one lap dash to the finish as Finney and Vail worked their way back up to take the place and show positions. Cornelius managed a fourth place finish with rookie Shaughn McCormick doing a great job for fifth. Rounding out the finishers were Corey Kaiser, Mark Adams, Myer, Ebersole, Bob Greene and Mark Emberson.
Allison made it a double on the night as he easily led the Mini Stock field flag to flag in his dad Pedie's four-cylinder machine. The race ran green to checker and Allison finished well in front second place Cody Blair. Chace Miller held off David Russell for third while Rob Reyniolds was fifth ahead of Mark Avery and Dylan Curtis. For the second year in a row, Allison will be focusing most of his racing efforts up north where he will be racing one of three cars out of the Harold Fair, Sr. stable on the Michigan-Illinois-Indiana circuit.
Once again the Super Stocks put on a great race with David Gould leading all the way but not without pressure from several different drivers. Billy Cuddy eventually ended up second ahead of Justin Reynolds while James Frisbie and John Bennett took fourth and fifth. Rounding out the top ten were John Hodge, Denny Johns, Cody Keeler, Delaun Fifeld and Billy Belflower.
The Super Stocks have now seen four different winners in four races this season.
Zack Jarrell grabbed the lead from Ben Kennedy on lap four and sped to his first career Speedworld win in the Taylor Racing Products Pro Truck feature. Kennedy held on for second ahead of Scott Reeves, Anthony Sergi and Doug Samion. The rest of the top ten were Tim Sozio, Andy Leserra, Zachary Curtis, Whitney Poole and Jason Rosarius.
Alex Kempf made it back to back wins in the Legends Cars as he zipped by early leader Tony Sansom on lap 13 and led the remaining distance. Sansom took the runner-up spot ahead of Zach Harris, Rick Wetmore, Ted Ruffo, Danny Conlin, Sr., Critter Saile, Gary Verdier and Roger Englund.
Jim "The Crusher" Erb switched cars this week but it made little difference as he sped to his third win in the Stictly Stocks which picked up late sponsorship from Brevard Rigging and Custom Nets out of Titusville.
Erb's E&H Car Crushing teammate William Hindman finished second for the second straight week followed by Ricky Solomon, Jr., Tim Walters, Jr. and Bruce Gayton. Completing the finishers were Allen McClelland, Neal Kirby, Jessie Cuddy, Danny Binda, Douglas Bear, and Shane Smith.
In Bandolero action, Tanner Cornwell topped Daniel Conlin, Jr. and Michael Held to win the 8-11 year old Bandit class while the 12-15 year old Young Guns saw Mark "Ice Man" Hooven out front at the finish ahead of Donovan Ponder and younger brother Shawn Hooven.
The Central Florida Wingless Sprints will make their first appearance of the year this coming Friday night along with the Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stocks, Strictly Stocks, Legends and Bandoleros. A huge Easter Egg Hunt will also be held for the kids with the grand prize of a new bicycle being hidden in one of the eggs.
