Troy DeCaire wins the TBARA Winged Sprint Feature Race at Desoto Super Speedway
By Tom Blakeley
March 21, 2009 Bradenton FL. Wow is the only way to describe those TBARA Winged Sprint Cars. What a show they put on at Desoto Super Speedway tonight. Just prior to the Feature Race Todd Morey the Track Co-Announcer ran through the stands and tossed out over 30 TBARA Driver autographed hats with signatures of David Steele, Troy DeCaire and many others. The fans were in a frenzy to get their hands on one of these prized hats. The Brighthouse camera crew was also in the house and taped the TBARA and it will be on BrightHouse Sports on April 1st at 5:00PM. More details to be announced later.
There were 25 of these super fast cars that started the 30 lap feature. Talented drivers like Troy DeCaire and David Steele raced lots of other very talented drivers. Crossing the finish line and taking the checkered flag was Troy DeCaire in his #68 car. David Steele in a new #14 car, took second place and ran out of laps as his chase to the front ended early. The talented Shane Butler in the #18 car won third place in the feature race.
TBARA also ran three Heat Races. Mickey Kempgens in the #78 car won the first 8 lap Heat race. Kipp Beard in the #66 car won the second Heat Race. Mr. Shane Butler in the #18 car won the third Heat Race of the evening for the real Sprint cars. These drivers and cars always are a crowd favorite and they lived up to that reputation tonight.
Enter the Extreme Bullet Car!! What is this crazy fast looking car? As the story goes Fred Hawkins of Freds Garage and Gus Coorssen came to the conclusion that parts for existing race cars were getting very difficult, if not impossible to find. Most of the cars on the track today are over 30 years old.
After a lot of research and exploring junk yards, they found a chassis which is readily available as well as the suspension parts which are compatible with racing. They designed and built the Extreme Bullet Car with both cost and speed in mind. The car sells for one third the cost of a Super Late Model, yet runs in the 15’s which is equal to the Super Late Model track speed. If you want to find out more about this incredible speed machine call Fred or Gus at the shop 941-355-6875 or cell is 941-809-3857. The shop is located at 1345 W. University Parkway, Unit 7. They are located on the curve behind Sarasota/Bradenton airport.
Magic 4’s. The magical mystical tour of the Magic 4’s began with two 6 lap Heat Races. They did not waste any time testing the yellow flag system as it worked before the first Heat lap was in the books. The yellow flag system worked very well and very often for this class tonight.
The first Heat Race was won by Zac Campilonga in the #30 car. The second Heat Race was won by Brittany Barr in the #81 car. The feature 20 lap race was won by Brittany Barr in the #81 car as well. Taking second was Austin Cavey in the #20 car. Mark Bartimac in the #21 car won third place.
The dualling duo of Barr and Cavey started at the drop of the green flag. Separated in the points standing by only one point they both wanted victory in a big way and it showed in the aggressive driving style they provided. It got so aggressive that the two got sent to the back after spinning out. These kids are just lots of fun to watch and they really get after it.
Street Stocks. The Street Stock Heat race was won by Joey Barnes in the #66 red car. The 25 lap Feature Race was won by Jimmy Best in the #67 car with Joey Barnes in the #66 car coming in a close second. Third place was won by Dennis Wilson in the #42 car. Duane Best in the #3 car lost a wheel on the front stretch and slammed the wall hard. Duane was ok but the car took some damage.
Pure Stocks. The Pure Stocks ran two Heat Races tonight with Richie Shepherd in the #30A car winning the first Heat Race and Troy Theim in the #18 car winning the second Heat Race. The feature 25 lap race was also won by Troy Theim in his #18 car. Taking second place was Robert Crisp in the Pops Thorbin #2 car. Winning third place was Richie Shepherd in the #30A car. This class is so closely matched that it is a crowd favorite and always intense on the track. The intensity was turned up a notch tonight and it ended up costing Allen Bragg in the #89 car the points for the race. After tangling with another car Bragg was black flagged for being too aggressive and running into two car intensionally. The crowd turned on the usually popular Bragg and cheered his being DQed.
Flyin 4’s. The Flyin4’s ran two Heat races tonight. The first Heat Race was won by JCR Jessica Ostrovskis in the #91 Pink bullet. The second Heat Race was won by Alex Patten in the #13 car. The 20 lap feature race was won by Alex Patten in his #13 car while Jessica Ostrovskis in her #91 car took a close second. Billy Carlbert JR. took third place in the #11 car. This class is really growing and is a crowd pleaser.
Rockem-Sockem Bombers. This was a Jody Collins night in the bomber class as old Part Time Collins took both the Heat and the Feature races checkered flags I the 32 C car. It was a fight to the finish though as Jeff Firestine took a close second in the 32F car, while Steve Elder in the #42 car drove a great race and finished in third place. The Bombers were good boys and drove a clean tough race.
Nice crowd, incredible racing, great food makes for an enjoyable night at the Speedway. Please join us next Saturday as the gates open at 5:30PM and racing begins at 7:00PM sharp. Racing next week will be Pro Trucks 50 lap Feature Race, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Sportsman, and the Legend cars return to Desoto Super Speedway.
