Brannon Captures ASA 100 at Charlotte County
|
By Dave Sully
Drew Brannon (08) prepares to take the lead from Brian Blum (31) in the early going. (Punta Gorda, Florida) Drew Brannon won the initial 2009 point race for the ASA Late Model South Series, edging Justin Martin in front of a large crowd at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday, March 14th.
Brannon, from Miami, took the lead on lap twenty-four in the rookie laden field (10 first year ASA drivers out of the sixteen car field), and held it the rest of the way, surviving a couple of late race restarts, to claim the checkers.
The race, named for track owner Bobby Diehl, had an inauspicious start as a four car spin on the opening circuit slowed the proceedings. When the race resumed the top three, polesitter Brian Blum (courtesy of the inversion of the top six time trialers), Casey Caudill, and Dustin Dunn, pulled out to a big lead as the other cars fought for position on the slick single-groove racing surface.
On lap twenty-two, Caudill (running second) spun coming out of turn four, setting up a restart which saw Blum leading Brannon, who had worked his way up from fifth, and Larson, who had gone off fourth. Brrannon was all over Blum when the race resumed and was able to wedge under him in turn one on lap twenty-four, taking Larson, from Clearwater, with him into second.
From there, Larson chased Bannon, and thanks to cautions on laps seventy-seven and eighty-four, was able to contend, but never able to get a run on the smooth running Bannon. At the line it was Brannon by three car lengths over Larson, with record fast timer Brandon Johnson nearby in third.
Dunn and Jeremy Gerstner, much further back, completed the top five. What appeared to be a good handling race car to the assemblage, was not, according to driver Brannon, replying to the announcer's comment about how well the car handled by saying, "I don't know what car you were looking at, but I was kind of having to drive it pretty hard there. The car was good, but we've got a lot of work to do."
Regarding the final restart, he added, "I had a little bit in reserve, and I had to use it all up there at the end. If we'd have gotten another caution I don't think we could have held him (Larson) off." For his part, Larson commenting on the final restart, noted, "I knew I had to get him while I could, and he was just a little better than I was on the restarts. I needed the long runs and unfortunately we had a couple of yellow flags at the end. That hurt me, but he did a good job and was a little better than we were."
In other action, Ross Chastain, from Alva, prevailed in a highly forgettable 50 lap Fastruck race, which needed three starts to record a lap, five more cautions, being put on the clock, and counting caution laps, before the race was mercifully flagged after a failed attempt at a green-white-checker.
Korey Abbott, from Sanford, won his second straight Legends race in the three race weekend series, beating Alex Kemp, while Chase Fitzgerald made a late pass to beat his girlfriend, Tara Henderson, to win the Champ Kart feature.
Brian Scheerer came from 26th to finish third. Finally, twelve year old Shawn Hoven won the Bandolero feature.
NOTES: Brannon's victory in the ASA race was the first outing for the sixteen year old in the SS Green Light Racing Late Model fielded by three time National ASA champ Butch Miller. It follows a championship effort in the limited late model division at the World Series of Asphalt Racing at New Smyrna in February where the youngster won three of the eight races contested.
Wayne "the rocketman" Jefferson won the 50 lap Open Wheel race on Sunday, starting on the pole of the 17 car field.
