Barberville, FL (March 14, 2009) Volusia Speedway Park had another great night of racing Saturday with plenty of cars and racing action for the fans. Even though the Sportsman had the weekend off, fans saw plenty of Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, 4 Cyl. Challengers and Thunder Stocks.
The Street Stocks put on the show of the night with nephew Charles "Bubba" Christian beating his uncle Grady for the win. On night one Grady took home the victory but it was Bubba who saw the checkered first Saturday night. For the first time ever, you could not tell who was second or third in the Street Stock division therefore awarding second to both Grady Christian and Steve Oldaker. Even with a video it was impossible to tell which one of the two crossed the checkered first giving them both second place. Steve Mooers, Michael Tovet and Charlie Macnichol rounded out the top five.
Mark Whitener dominated the Late Model class but it was the second, third, and fourth place drivers who gave the crowd a treat as they went back and forth for position. At the end, it was Whitner taking the checkered followed by Stanton Mills, David Clegg, Lawton Minchew, and Jeff Phipps.
Jamie Carter of Jacksonville took the Modified win with seventeen cars in the field. Coming home second was Rob Underwood who settled for seventh on week one. Ronnie Chance took third over Nick Kirkus in fourth and Jimmy Carter in fifth.
Thunder Stocks, the newest class at Volusia, is still growning. Todd Roberts of Summerfield topped the field after his fourth place finish last Saturday. Previous winner of week one, Scott Mooers, came in second followed by Wally Douglas and C.J. Johnston.
There was one driver who did make it two in a row for wins, Tony Laporta in the 4 Cyl Challenger division. Laporta, who started seventh in the feature, drove his car to Victory Lane. Coming in second was Danny Lunn who was also second on week one. Lunn started fifth and came home second. Gilbert Espy was third followed by Jamie Anderson who drove a great race from 13th to fourth. Daniel Laird finished fifth.
Saturday, March 21st, Volusia Speedway Park reprsents Welcome to Spring with Late Models, Sportsman, Thunder Stock, 4-Cylinder Challenger plus Mini-Stock $500 to Win. Pit gate opens at 4:30 pm with grandstands opening at 5:30 pm. Racing begins promptly at 7:30 pm.
