Racers earn third victories during 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH
BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Feb. 6, 2009 — UMP DIRTcar Modified racer Jared Landers and World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz regained their dominance of the 38th Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH on Friday night when each captured their respective feature events at Volusia Speedway Park.
The victories strengthen their positions in the battle to be crowned the event’s Alltel All-Star.
Fans can vote via text message to 247253 and enter their favorite driver’s letter code, or by visiting AlltelAllStar.com and casting a ballot. Votes will be tallied daily until Feb. 28. The overall winner as determined by fan votes will receive the $10,000 grand prize, while the top vote-getter in the other three divisions will earn $1,000. Over 12 consecutive nights from Feb. 3 to Feb. 14, 410 Sprint Cars, UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, Dirt Late Models and Big-Block Modifieds will all compete.
In the UMP DIRTcar Modified main event, Landers took the green in sixth place and was moving forward when Michael Long and Matt Goulden tangled. Landers moved to the front and held off Thursday winner Austin Dillon for his third victory in four nights.
“I don’t know if I can keep outrunning my guys there,” said Landers, who built cars for several of the top contenders, including Dillon. “We’re going to give it our best shot.”
Schatz, the three-time defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champ, started from the pole for the series’ season debut, but tailed Jason Sides for the first 10 laps. Schatz, winner on the first two nights of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH, snuck past Sides on Lap 11 and drove to a comfortable Alltel Wireless Victory Lane celebration.
“The first one is always the toughest,” said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D. “Last year we had to wait until the middle of April. We love getting to victory lane, how we get there doesn’t matter. I feel like we could have been a little better, but we learned a lot. That’s what’s important. Every night you have to learn from your mistakes. We’ll come back tomorrow night and work a little harder.”
Heading into a season with a high level of competition, Schatz knew a fast start was important if he’s going to win his fourth consecutive World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship.
“I don’t know that we’re trying to send a message,” Schatz said. “We’re just doing our jobs and doing them well. I’ll get my mojo going shortly and get in a rhythm. These guys deserve all the credit. They worked on the cars all winter and made them absolutely awesome. I’m just lucky to be the guy driving them.”
Through four nights of competition at the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH, the Alltel All-Star contenders and their text message Letter Codes (in parenthesis) include:
Sprint Cars — Donny Schatz, Fargo, N.D. (b); Stevie Smith, Broken Arrow, Okla. (d).
