By Tom Blakeley
(November 29th, 2008. Bradenton, Florida) It was a pretty good crowd for the last week of the racing season, and they really got treated to some classic racing action. The evening got started with a visit from the Thundering Herd. The Desoto Champ Karts took to the track first. The Karts drove two 8-lap heat Races. Dustin Chisolm who is the points Champion at Desoto Super Speedway for the Limited Late Model Class also won the first Kart heat race in the #7 Kart. . P. J. Letourneau in the #61 Kart, took second place and Andy Whah won third in the #13 Kart.
The second 8-lap heat race was won by Brian Scherrer in the # 17 Kart. Driving to second was Bo Howard in the #88 Kart, and taking third was J. D. Cordon in the #99 Kart.
The Pure Stocks invaded the asphalt oval and delivered as always. It was a heart pounding affair from the drop of the green flag. Allen “Mr. Burnout” Bragg got the fast start and never looked back, in fact he led all 25-laps. Of course “Rockin” Robert Crisp was breathing down his back and coming on strong the last few laps. At the checkered flag it was Allen Bragg in the #89 car winning. Robert Crisp took second in the #2 car, and Troy Theim in the #18 car placed third.
There was a yellow flag on lap-6 as the #07 car driven by Billy Calbert Jr. went hard into the wall. After the race Allen Bragg and Pure Stock Points Champion Randy Johnson lined their cars up on the front stretch and did a serious burn out that really pleased the fans. It was a great race and a great season for these Pure Stock owners and drivers, and the fans showed their appreciation with a standing ovation.
Street Stocks were next onto the track. This 25-lap feature was full of excitement. On lap-3 Ken Smith in the #10 car went into the dirt pile and ended up with a tractor tire stuck behind his rear tire and wheel well. It took the tow truck and 3 large officials to remove the huge tire. Going to Victory Circle was Jonathan Heidenthal in the 27X car as the winner. Placing second was Alex Abbott in the #17 car, and third was James Brenner in the #57 car.
The 25-lap feature Kart race was next on the agenda. The field included 14 Karts and at the checkered flag non other than J. D. Cordon in the #99 Kart won the race. Dustin Chisholm in the #7 Kart was second and third belonged to Brian Scherrer in the #17 Kart. It was a very good race with a very close finish.
At intermission the fans were treated to a couple special demonstrations. First, the #05 Tide car from the NASCAR Busch Series which was driven by Ricky Rudd in his last year with Hendrick Motorsports came out and turned in some hot laps. This car was last raced at the 1993 Miller Genuine Draft 500 July 18th. It qualified 3rd and finished 11th and was retired after that race. It has been restored and owned Patrick Jaehne of Venice Florida. Also doing a terrific demonstration on motorcycle stunt riding were three riders from the Rock Star Energy drink group.
The Pro Trucks then took to the track. These drivers really get after it and they were up to the task tonight. Eleven trucks started the race and there were 4 yellow flags and one complete restart before Stephen Darvalics took the checkered flag in his #41 Truck. Stephen Nasse in the #69 Truck was second and third belonged to Blair pontious in the #39 Truck. On lap-22 Charlie Montgomery the Truck Points Champion at Desoto Super Speedway spun out and had to go to the pits. It was a very close race and a great way to end the season for the Truck Class.
Oh hold onto your hat….it is Rockem Sockem Time. The Bombers were feeling lonely and in need of love, compassion and paint rubbin! So they took to the track for the last race of the season. A season where the points championship was still up for grabs which is pretty amazing. Several of these cars made it to the track every week. That is no easy task as the season ran 40 weeks. Our hats are off to you bomber owners and drivers. The Bomber Class made for lots of fun and excitement for the fans. Tonight the Points Championship was decided with Michael “The Punisher” Crooks winning the title. The 25-lap race was won by Steve “The Hammer” Elder in the #42 car. Second place belonged to Bobby Frisch in the #92 car, and in third place was John “The Mayor” Stewart in the Hot Rod Cacing #02 car. Todd Jacob’s who had to borrow a truck to get his car to the track came in a very respectable 4th. Michael “The Punisher” Crooks came in 5th.
A perfect finish to a perfect night would have to include some School Bus racing. And School Bus Figure 8 racing makes for heart pounding excitement With 17 buses starting the race, it was crazy. These drivers don’t care, three and four wide into turns, bouncing and bumping all the way. Going to Victory Circle was Jimmy Volk in the #76 Bus. Taking a close second was Earnest Helfrick in the #4 Rebel Bus. Placing third was Robert Coon in the 8UP CooneyGump Racing Bus. Both Helfrick and Coon had to work their way from the rear to take 2nd and 3rd, quite a task.
The next event at Desoto Super Speedway is December 31st for the New Years Eve Crash and Bash Spectacular. Fans will be treated to a School Bus Figure 8 race and many other races of special interest. The fireworks will be set off from the infield and breakfast is included. Ring in the New Year with your friends at Desoto Super Speedway. If you have any questions please call us at 941-748-3171
