Nosbisch Overcomes to take UDLMCS Kim Allen Memorial at Hendry County
By Rick Anges
Clewiston, Fl. (11/01/08) With points season down to two races the top teams of the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series returned to the Southern Most Dirt Track in the U.S.A., New Hendry County Speedway. With a 130-point lead over “the Magic Man” Mark Whitener “the Locomotive” Johnny Collins looked to widen his point’s lead. Collins was coming off a big win with a Friday night win at Ocala Speedway who ran a “Topless” race. And in a cooperative move series director Ken Kinney made the nights racing “topless” optional.
“The Professor” Ivedent Lloyd won the first race for the UDLMCS at Hendry in March. But his night ended before qualifying as he broke a motor during hot laps.
Just on the outside looking in was “Showtime” Shan Smith just 100 points behind Whitener. Smith was coming off a hot October run. Showtime. Took three wins at three different tracks, Ocala, Volusia and Eastbay. Shan is no stranger to the New Hendry County Speedway and was one of the cars to keep an eye on.
Pace American Rookie of the year contender Justin Choquette wowed everyone during qualifying running a 15.718 second lap which ended up being third fast time for the evening’s event. But it was Keith Nosbisch who took the Ziegler Racing Engines fast time award with a Ziegler power plant at a 15.623.
With the top ten in qualifying locked in the “Dough Boy” signs B-Mains would decide the final starting order for the fifty-one-lap feature event.
Johnny Collins would take the win the first B-main followed by Roger Crouse and Dennis Williams. Adam Bedenbaugh took the Second B-main, second across Kent Corbin and Ryan Bernhardt third.

The packed grandstands roared to life as Ken Kinney’s Daughter Brittany gave the command “Gentlemen Start Your Engines”. The engines fired. The pre-race pill draw sent Justin Choquette to the pole and Keith Nosbisch back to the third spot for the start of the race.
Several cautions marred the start of the race one of those being for Choquette who slowed on the front stretch with terminal problems as he was pushed into the pits and did not return.
When the green finally flew it was outside pole sitter Jackie Nosbisch taking the lead with Keith hot on his tail. Keith and Jackie swapped the lead but it was the 101 pilot who finally settled in. Jackie Nosbisch would have his problems after spinning just passed the half way mark and would drop to a sixteenth finishing position.
Cautions bunched the field for restarts and several drivers made a stab at the top spot including both cars from the fifth row. Point’s leader Collins went after Nosbisch after a restart but slid high losing several spots. After running in the top five all most of the race Collins settle for a sixth place run.
“We came back to get our asphalt car ready for New Smyrna and decided to run here” said Jeff Choquette, “It’s been awhile since I have ran dirt and was over driving the car in hot laps”. The Loxahatchee pilot didn’t take long to show where his roots in racing were as he moved from his eleventh starting spot to as far up as second. He would end up taking the checkered flag in a solid fifth place.
Once again lapped traffic would come into play as it did for the previous race at East Bay. With Nosbisch closing in to lap him Kent Corbin slowed coming out of turn two causing Nosbisch to take evasive action, going over the berm into the infield. The leader would make contact with a tractor tire in the infield and almost stall the engine. The veteran would keep the car running and pull back out onto the track in the third spot.
Shan Smith would take over the lead but Nosbisch would close back into second and after a restart for a yellow would use a sling shot move out of turn two and would lead until the checkered flag taking the $7,000 winners share and become the eighth different winner for the UDLMCS for 2008. Smith would take a well-deserved second place. Whitener would make a small gain on Collins in the points with a third place finish. Dillon Wood of New Smyrna finished fourth with Jeff Choquette in fifth.
The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series will wind up the 2008 season at Eastbay Raceway Park November 8th and crown the points champion.
