"I'm
noticing a turn of the tide on racing Web sites like Florida's
Karnac.com, the gathering place for the most dedicated race
fans in the state." -Orlando Sentinel
The Staff at Bronson Motor Speedway was proud to pay respect to a true legend of Florida racing last Saturday night as they held the inaugural Charlie Meyer Tribute. The tribute was a way to honor the accomplishments of one of the best Figure 8 racers in the country. Ten of the best Figure 8 Drivers, including Charlie Meyer himself, took the green for the feature event. Robbie Hage used his front row starting spot to jump out front early. He was followed by Cliff Rousseau and Zack Perry. Robert Aaron was charging through the field trying to track down the leaders. Hage built a pretty good lead until the pace was slowed for a tremendous “T-Bone” at the intersection on the Figure 8 course. The accident eliminated contender Perry and Neil Herne, Jr. Once the race restarted Hage continued to show the way. Rousseau and Aaron put up a strong charge but neither could pass the eventual winner, Robbie Hage.
The grand finale of the night was the School Bus Figure 8 and the crowd was not disappointed as there were several close calls in the intersection throughout the race! “Pops” Armstrong would start on the pole, however had transmission problems and could not get the huge bus rolling off to a good start. Tony Clark took his 17 Bus to Victory Lane, with Robert Aaron in the #1 Bus and Mark Wilkins piloting the # 10 Hungry Howie’s Bus charging after him in the final laps!
In Limited Sportsman action, Matt Blum passed Mike Baker just before half way in their 30 lap feature to capture another win. Baker had to settle for second. The best battle of the night was a four way struggle for third. As they crossed the line side by side, William Edwards edged Shelton Bowers and Rick Case rounded out the top five.
The competition is really heating up in the Super Stock Division! Brent Cooper witnessed his winning ways come to and end at the hands of Larry Welter, Jr. The driver of the # 58 led all 25 laps on his way to the win and Tommy Ausburn finished third for another solid run.
Eric Gellman was dominationing the Thunder Stock feature until a mechanical gremlin slowed the pace. It appeared he had a large enough margin to coast to the win but Larry Welter, Sr. passed him with only a few laps remaining. A very surprised Welter, Sr was happy to pick up the win but was concerned about his teammate’s misfortune.
Dustin Hughes would take another victory in the FWD Hornet Division and Lamar Smith was victorious in the RWD Hornet Division.
