Erb and Berrer big Winners at Orlando's Crash-A-Rama
by Dave Westerman
The Spring/Summer version of Orlando Speedworld's Crash-A-Rama had a little bit of everything, starting a bit late Friday evening due to some rain showers then carrying on into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Just as the fans began to enter for the night's festivities, Mother Nature threw a curve ball in the form of a persistent light rain shower that took the better part of an hour to clear. Undaunted, the early arrivals staked a claim to the "best seats in the house" and waited out the wet stuff. The rain also put a damper on preparations for fireworks and pyro being set up by Orlando Special Effects. Once the precipitation ended, the guys were able to finish up, just a bit behind their intended schedule.
Despite the wet stuff, school bus rides were held for the kids and there were plenty of things for the fans to do as several drivers from Speedworld's Friday and Saturday racing shows had their machines on display and the food was plentiful.
Action began around 8:30 with the first event, the Enduro race. This would turn out to be a three car duel late in the going that saw Eddie Lawler come out on top over Rikki Hidieiz and Jim Erb.
Erb would end up having quite a night as he and his E&H Car Crushing team took home quite a bit of loot along with several trophies. Erb would win his sixth career School Bus Figure Eight race but would have to duke it out with teammate William Hindman and Mike Gamache right to the checkered flag. Erb's team would also take a win in the Stock Roller Derby race. Erb would score second place finishes in both the Boat/Trailer race and Flagpole race while Hindman won the Skid Car race with Erb also taking second in that event.
Demo Dave Berrer lived up to his name by taking wins in both the FWD and V-8 Demo Derbies. The wins ended a long drought for the likeable driver from Orlando who still seemed in a bit of shock after everything calmed down. To top it off, Dave's wife, Jenny Berrer, won the all female Mini Van Demo Derby.
Bomber Bill Loomis is becoming the "King" of the Flag Pole racers as he dominated for his second straight victory in the event winning by over half a lap over Erb and Brandon Morris. Loomis also had a good evening taking sixth in the Enduro and third place finishes in the Boat/Trailer race and V-8 Demo Derby.
The Pro Roller Derby race went to the team led by veteran Moe Knauer while the Boat/Trailer race was won by West Coast veteran Mike Gamache over Erb and Loomis.
