Brandon Carlson made it three in a row for the Carlson family at Five Flags Speedway last night, winning his second Pro Late Model feature of the season. Carlson's first win came in the previous Pro Late Model race on May 9. His father, Scott Carlson, won the Super Late Model Blizzard Series race a week ago.
"The car was perfect tonight," said the younger Carlson. "It's pretty special to win back to back with Dad. Hopefully we can keep it going."
With the win Carlson unofficially took the lead in the championship standings.
"I'm pretty sure we took the points lead tonight," said Carlson. "After missing the first race this year, I didn't know if we could win the championship, but now I'm pretty sure we can."
Carlson led every lap of the 40 lap race, taking the lead over Johanna Long on the start. While Carlson stretched his lead, fourth starting, Logan Boyett, closed in on Long.
On lap 10 Boyett made the pass on Long, but never made any ground on Carlson and never got a caution to close the gap.
"When I got to second I thought I could catch him," said Boyett who missed the last race to go to his high school prom. "But the car just wouldn't go through the center of the corner like I needed it to. We'll take second tonight, but we'll be better next time."
Long, still looking for her first win at Five Flags, finished third, scoring her second consecutive top three finish.
Brandon Odom finished fourth with Hal Martin rounding out the top five.
Defending champion Chris Cotto scored his first win of the season in the 25 lap Super Stock feature. Cotto led every lap, holding off a hard charging Tommy Rollins.
Rollins passed Shannon Jackson for second on lap 18, but came up a few feet short as he pulled up to Cotto's door at the finish.
The two made contact past the line sending Cotto spinning.
"I knew he was close," said Cotto. "I was racing hard to the finish, and then I spun myself out after it was over. I'm just glad we held on for the win."
Rollins was disqualified when his car didn't pass tech inspection, moving Jackson up to second and last week's winner, Brandon Harris, to third.
Randy Thompson scored the win in the Sportsmen feature, his fourth of the season. Thompson nearly spun on the last lap as he and Billy Hoover made contact coming to the finish line.
Thompson straightened his car back up, beating Hoover by a car length at the finish.
Bo Resmondo finished third.
Daryl Lynchard won the Bomber feature ahead of points leader Pete Kitchen and Michael Nelson.
