Wally Smith remains king of the figure 8 boat races
By Linda Jericka
Once again the fans at Charlotte County Motorsports park were treated to a full action packed night of racing, with ten features and Fan participation. Fastruck Pro’s, one of the main events of the night was the first race of the state champion for the trucks and it was Ross Chastain who set fast time and started in the fourth position.
It only took the 36 of Chastain the fifteen year old out of alva two laps to move into the lead and hold off the field for the win. The 4 truck driven by Patrick Fox who seemed to have one of the fast trucks of the night would have to settle for second with the 37 of Nick Hernandez coming in third, since Hernandez was one of the Fastkids who ran with the pro‘s, he would be scored as the winner of the Fastkids.
Some drivers dusted off there mini stock cars and came out to run twenty five laps at CCMP and it was the 54 car driven by Ricky Bullard Jr. of Arcadia who clearly had the fastest car of the night by lapping almost the entire field and crui sing into the winners circle in both the heat and the feature, the 22 of Cameron Cruse second and Jon Bailey third. Road Warriors saw the same orange cars in the winners circle after twenty five laps of hard charging, paint swapping racing.
The 32 of Jesse Duttilly by no means had an easy win with the 93 of Jeff Firestine out of Venice on his bumper for second and Terry Price came in third but was Dqed in tech which moved the 97 of Chris Scott up to third. Twelve Open Wheels took to the track with the 1 of Wayne Jefferson sitting on the pole and the 89 of Lee Collins outside him and the second row had fast qualifier Sean McLaughlin, it was thought by all that this is going to be interesting.
The 1 of Wayne Jefferson did not get his nickname “ the Rocketman” for nothing, the green dropped and he took off and lead all fifty laps, Lee Collins being his first time back in a while was in and out of the pits trying to get the tire pressure right while Sean Mclaughlin was the only one who could keep up with the rocket. That is how the race would finish with the 83 of Andrew Alderman third Kendrick Gomez fourth and Scott McDaniel fifth.
Thunder Trucks saw Ryan Pancoast out of Lehigh driving the 14 truck again this week making some three wide, split them in half moves to get into the lead and lapping trucks to go on for the win. The 35 of Ray Jayne finished second and Ryan Meiser third.
Then one of the races becoming a regular at CCMP the figure 8 class were a mixture of 4 cylinders and trucks and big cars all came out to give the fans 20 laps of excitement when they saw the 4 cylinder of Wally Smith jump out in front and fly through that x like his little car was really a tank. It took the big orange car of Jeff Firestine ten laps to get past Smith who stayed in the second spot on the bumper of the 93. After the win in the Trunder Trucks Ryan Pancoast went to the pits for a quick splash n go and came out for the figure 8 and made it up to the third spot when a car s pun in the x sending him up and over the tires which is were he was stuck for the last lap giving the third spot to the 18 of Greg Anderson, Jerry Tetting was fourth and Pancoast fifth. Figure 8 “last man standing boat race” was the last event of the night and the big crowd of fans stayed till the very end and got to see one of the best boat races. There were some new drivers and new car and boats that came out for the extra prize money that was put up by the Sunshine State Racing magazine and what a show it was when David Weaver was so close to breaking the winning streak of Wally Smith.
The race was down to Weaver and Smith and both trying to knock each others boat off when Weaver while trying to get Wally’s boat off the trailer or Wally hitting Weaver, spun and hit the tires and went up in the air and landed on top of the tires which gave Wally Smith the win and keeping his winning streak alive.
