SCHILLIG IN LEGENDS - WHITE AND RUST SPLIT PRO CHALLENGE WINS SATURDAY AT SPEEDWORLD
By Dave Westerman
Orlando Speedworld was back in action Saturday night with plenty of racing that produced one first time winner. In the Legends, it was once again Tyler Smith of Clermont dominating the Charger feature race for less experienced drivers. Smith was a half lap ahead of second place Taylor McKeever as the checker fell.
Mike Gleason, Roger Englund, Ted Ruffo, Daniel Conlin, Sr. and Tim Harris trailed the lead duo. Smith also won the heat. The regular 25 lap main event for the Legend Cars saw Alex Kempf jump out to an early lead as the action was simply wild behind him. Eventually, Dave Gleason was able to sneak into the front spot bringing Chelsea Schillig and Shaughn McCormick in tow. Schillig got past Gleason just before the first caution flag flew for Dalton Bergman.
Bergman had to go high to avoid a slowing car, got into the "marbles" and hit the back stretch wall. Bergman was OK but his car was done for the evening. Just after the restart, Gleason and McCormick got together going into turn three with Gleason spinning backwards into the wall, but fortunately with minimal damage.
At that point, officials waved the black flag at McCormick to come to the infield for consultation. Instead, McCormick drove to the pits and withdrew from the race. Gleason was placed back in second spot for the restart and he stayed there through lap 16 when mechanical ills forced him off track. Schillig had no problem in picking up her second win of the year as she finished several car lengths in front of Gerald White, Jr., Tony Sansom, Kempf, and Mark Bibeau. Rounding out the finishers were Mason Ketterman, Rick Wetmore, Charger winner Smith, Gleason, McCormick, Leonard Hearndon and Bergman. Dallas Ingram dropped out before taking the green. Legend heats were won by McCormick and Kempf.
The Pro Challenge cars and trucks were back in action and their racing provided three different winners. Jarrett Snowden captured the heat race but would finish in the runner-up spot to Paul White of Eustis who won his first career race in the opening 25 lap feature. Ryan Rust claimed third spot over Gene Dibble, Sam White, Ron Stanley and Darrin Miller.
The second feature race was all Ryan Rust as he grabbed the lead then held off Paul White and Sam White for the win. Stanley, Snowden, Miller and Dibble completed the finishing field. The Hearndon Construction Bandoleros saw Critter Saile back in victory lane once again in the Bandits as he led flag to flag to take the win over Jake Perkins, Shawn Hooven, Justin Bechtold, Coty Bibeau, Cameron White and Daniel Conlin, Jr. Critter also took the heat race win.
After heat winner Mark Hooven suffered a flat tire, Donovan Ponder sped off to the win in the Young Guns feature over Zach Harris, Carl Haag, Kaleb Hearndon, Steven Maier and Hooven. Mark Walls drove his Ford Probe to the win in the ABC Towing/Best Used Auto Parts Hurricane feature race. Rob Reynolds made a great early race move to get the lead and appeared headed to the win before his car began to slow visibly.
Just after being passed by Walls for the lead, the engine in Reynolds' car blew up in a plume of smoke going into turn one. The smoke was so thick the cars had to be stopped for a short period to let it clear. Trailing Walls to the checker were heat winner Brian Cosier, Tim Walters, Jr., Blaize Fisher, Michael Seay, Brenda Taylor, Ralph Cammarasana, TonyCammarasana, Reynolds and Gary Thomas.
