It was a spectacular night for racing at Bronson Motor Speedway Saturday Night as a large crowd turned out as the speedway celebrated Armed Forces Day. All Military Personnel, active or retired, were admitted free in appreciation to our United States Armed Forces. Again this weekend, the focus was on the local drivers as part the “grassroots racing” program.
The Hornet Division is really beginning to take off. Last week there were only a couple of cars, this week however nine competitors showed up with many others only a week or two away. Already the Hornet class is proving to be a fan favorite with lots of passing and action on the track. In his first week out, Mike Brooks held off the field to score a win in the newly formed division. Another new young driver, Mike Baker, Jr. (whose Dad races in the Sportsman Division) took to the speedway for his first time and did a great job!
The Welter’s domination continued in the Thunder Stock Division. This time Larry Welter, Jr. raced his way through the pack to score another win over Wallace Jones III and Aaron Welter. Don Welter would come home fourth after a spin out of four and then raced to the checkered flag.
In Super Stock action, all eyes were again on Brent Cooper. Cooper has dominated the class in the past few weeks. Although he did see his winning streak end the previous week, he was looking to start a new one. At the start, Tommy Ausburn took the lead and led the first five circuits. On lap six, Cooper passed the leader with Larry Welter in tow. The battle between Cooper and Welter was just heating up when a mechanical problem cut Welter’s night short. From there Cooper cruised to victory lane and another streak was born.
Another great field of Limited Sportsman turned out, including Shelton Bowers who had an engine expire in practice and went and picked up his back up car and was back for the feature. Dot Kelly picked up a Heat Race Win and led the field to the green in the feature. Her tenure at the front would be short lived as Jim Higginbotham and others dove to the inside and shuffled Kelly back. Higginbotham held the lead for a number of laps, however a slip off turn four allowed Mike Baker to snatch the lead away from Jim Higginbotham. Baker was able to fend off a late charge from William Edwards to secure his fifth win on the season. Higginbotham would take home third followed by Robbie Cooper in Shane Bastow’s 04 ride and Gordon Cade taking home fifth.
Next Saturday Night the “Back to Grassroots” Racing continues with Limited Sportsman, Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks and the new and exciting Hornet Divisions. Remember race fans, adult admission only $ 10.00 in the grandstands and all kids 11-under are free! Come on out and celebrate Memorial Day with the family at the speedway for a night of Good Food, Good Family Fun and Great Saturday Night Racing Action!
