Bruns in Mods, McCormick in Legends, Nicholls in Sportsman at Orlando SpeedWorld
by Dave Westerman
Along with the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 Friday night at Orlando Speedworld, race fans were treated to plenty of other great racing in several other divisions.
Alan Bruns' luck wasn't too good in the Goodyear Challenge race but he made up for it in the 20 lap Modified feature. Bruns snared the lead from Chris Smyth on lap six and was never headed as the former track champ took his first win of the season.
Smyth spun out just after being passed for the lead for the race's only caution flag but recovered to finish fourth behind Bruns, Bobby Joe Woodley and Mark Emberson. Bruce Packer, Art Kunzeman and Randy Froelich rounded out the finishers.
The Legend Cars were in action as well Friday night with Tyler Smith topping the Charger feature over Tim McCormick and Daniel Conlin, Sr. That qualified Smith to start the Legends "A" main for the first time in his young career. Smith was holding his own in the 25 lap main event but mechanical troubles forced him off the track before mid race.
Chelsea Schillig led the race from the drop of the green and built up a decent lead before the caution flew on lap nine for Gerald White, Jr.'s spin off turn four. At halfway, Dave Gleason, who was having a strong run in the top three, spun in turn four but recovered without a caution. Unfortunately he looped the car again in turn two to bring out the second and final yellow flag.
That allowed Shaughn McCormick to move up on Schillig's bumper for the restart. Schillig, who was battling a loose race car, got a bit high off turn four on lap 14 allowing McCormick to scoot by into the lead. McCormick led the remaining distance to score his first regular season win. Schillig took home the second spot followed by a resurgent White, Mark Bibeau and Alex Kempf. Completing the top ten were Tony Sansom, Rick Wetmore, Dalton Bergman, Dallas Ingram and Gleason. After spending all week rebuilding his car from a crash the week before, Bobby Riley led flag to flag in the Super Stock feature and was well in front of the rest of the field when the checker flew. Ray Mullis and John Hodge finished second and third after a race-long duel while Jason Pick and Austin Carr rounded out the top five. Dennis Snyder, Butch Carr, Jr. and Ray Brown were the remaining finishers. Andy Nicholls zipped by early leader Derrick Wood at the half-way mark and never looked back as he scored his sixth win in a row in the Sportsman class. Timmy Todd, Jr. was a close second followed by Wood, Jessie Cuddy, Steve Farris and Paul Colgan.
The Action Gator Tire Strictly Stock finish was a bit strange to say the least. Jim Erb crossed the stripe in first place but was set back two spots for jumping an earlier restart. That gave Devon Cuddy the apparent win over Bill Loomis but both were disqualified for using inappropriate tires and wheels.
That meant Erb ended up with the win anyway despite the penalty. Mike Dresch was second over Neal Kirby, Glen Rhodes, and Tim Walters, Jr. Completing the finishers were Ricky Solomon, Jr., Shane Smith, Brenda Taylor, Joey Cason, Robert Remus, Ralph Cammarasana and Danny Binda. In Hearndon Construction Bandolero action, Critter Saile topped the Bandit class over Shawn Hooven, Jake Perkins, Coty Bibeau, Cameron White and Daniel Conlin, Jr. while Zach Harris won his first-ever feature taking the Young Gun main event over Donovan Ponder and Mark Hooven.
Fan Participation winners were David Furtado in a Mercury Marauder and Michael Webster in a Honda Civic.
