Mark Chrudimsky drove 723 miles from his home in Hutto, Texas, to race in the 40-lap Modified feature Friday night at Five Flags Speedway. He also took the long route to reach Victory Lane.
Chrudimsky survived two spins to win the feature. It was a satisfying finish after taking second place in the Modified feature in December during Snowball Derby week.
"It's great. It makes the long trip worthwhile," he said.
Chrudimsky started fifth, but pulled up alongside leader Rege Hellett on the outside on Turn 4 when they touched and Chrudimsky spun out, as well as several cars behind him.
On the restart, he was part of a multi-car spin that took out several cars, including Chris Cotto. Chrudimsky was able to drive through, and following a red-flag period, restarted in third.
On Lap 14, Chrudimsky went outside of the two leaders, Hellett and Scott Barbaric, in Turn 1 to take the lead. He easily pulled away from that point. Barbaric finished second, while Todd Jones was third.
The 40-lap Pro Late Model feature was a caution-free, uneventful race. For the driver in the lead, that's not all bad. Brad Webb of Wetumpka, Ala., led all 40 laps and was never challenged. He didn't even have to deal with lap traffic as all 12 cars finished on the lead lap.
"I've been out of racing for 10 years," Webb said in Victory Lane. "What a way to come back. I'll be here for every race."
Brandon Odom finished second, followed by Sammy McMullen, Hal Martin and John Bolen. Webb started second, but slipped past polesitter Johanna Long at the start. Odom took second and they stayed that way through all 40 laps.
Martin was the fastest qualifier, but he drew a six on the dice roll to determine the inverted start and started sixth. Mike Kitchen won the 15-lap Bomber race, followed by Pete Kitchen, Danny Burns and Michael Nelson.
Billy Hoover won the 20-lap Sportsman feature. Hoover passed Willie Kitchen for the lead on Lap 8.
Two laps later, the race was red flagged when Wayne Burkett spun and Jim Pokrant drove into him hard on the door side. Both drivers were OK.
Randy Thompson had to start 12th after his axle broke during the heat race. He moved up to third after eight laps, then got back Kitchen for second, but couldn’t catch Hoover in time.
Kitchen finished third, while Bo Resmondo was fourth.
The track is back in action April 11 with the first Super Late Model Blizzard Series race of the season.
