Allison wins both Super Late and Mini Stock Features at Orlando SpeedWorld
by Dave Westerman
Orlando Speedworld finally got the 2008 FASCAR racing season under way Friday night and the defending Super Late Model champion, Jared Allison, took not one, but two feature victories on the night.
Allison, who will race primarily up north this year driving for veteran Harold Fair, Sr., nabbed the Super Late Model heat race win but gridded sixth for the 25 lap feature. Making his return after a long lay-off, Bobby Orr grabbed the early lead but not without pressure from Kurt Jett, Patrick Conrad and Allison.
On lap five, Jett and Conrad got together sending both to the rear of the pack for the restart. As the green flew, Allison blew by Orr who was having trouble on the starts with a slipping clutch. Scott McKinley spun at the end of lap six for caution number two.
Allson sped away from the field at that point until Orr spun in turn four on lap 13 and was hit by Conrad. Orr was able to continue but Conrad took his machine to the infield.
Allison had no trouble distancing himself from the rest of the field as he took the checker several lengths in front of Jett, who recovered for second. Vince Keeler, Sr. had his best career finish in third followed by Earl Beckner and Orr. Mark Emberson was sixth, McKinley seventh and Conrad was credited with eighth. Timmy Todd, Jr. and Bob Green did not start the feature.
With dad Pedie Allison unable to drive in the Mini Stocks due to a sore shoulder, Jared Allison hopped in last years championship-winning four cylinder and dominated both the heat and feature races. The feature event for the Mini Stocks ran green to checker with Allison winning handily over Rex "Boneman" Hollinger, Randy Blakeslee, Mike Muroski, Rob Reynolds, Emily Cottrell and Bob Kelchner.
Kurt Jett backed up his runner-up finish in the Super Late Models with a win in the Modified feature. Jett was trailing defending champion Shane Held, when the leader spun on lap nine just as Jett was really starting to apply the pressure.
Jett raced off to the win ahead of Art Kunzeman, Held, Chris Smyth, Randy Froelich, Joe Guzzo and Mark Emberson. Jett also won the heat race.
Derrick Wood grabbed the early lead in the Sportsman feature only to see heat winner Ted Head speed past on lap three. Head looked like a sure winner but his car began to slow late in the going and he was freight-trained during the finial two laps and, to add insult to injury, had his engine blow just as he took the checkered flag in fourth place.
Justin Reynolds led the final lap to claim the win over Wood, Andy Nicholls, Head and Jessie Cuddy. Ron DiCandio, Don Milam, Bill Hall, Ryan Rust and Bryan Lynch, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
Young Matt Jarrett scored his first-ever win here in the Super Stock feature leading green to checker. Jarrett defeated an impressive field of cars leading Bobby Riley, David Gould, Jason Pick and John Hodge to the stripe. Completing the top ten were Ray Mullis, Matt Reynolds, Vince Keeler, Jr., Austin Carr and Dennis Snyder. Gould and Riley won the heats.
Bill Loomis was a late replacement for scheduled driver Danny Tyler and he drove his Monte Carlo to the win in the Action Gator Tire Strictly Stock feature after apparent winner Devon Cuddy was disqualified for not having the correct size tires. Following Loomis to the checker were Gary Thomas, Glen Rhodes, Neal Kirby and Tom Stewart with Tim Walters, Jr., Tim Burr, Michael Poole, Billy Rouse and Roger Mullins the remainder of the top ten.
After two hours of trying to keep the track dry, the Saturday program finally gave in to Mother Nature. One "track drying" feature for the ABC Towing Hurricanes was run however, with the win going to William Hindman.
