It took Wayne Anderson 10 laps to get to the front in Saturday night's 100-lapper for Super Late Models at Charlotte County Motorsports Park. From there, the son of Florida's winningest short-track driver ever checked out on the field in his red No. 84 car.
Anderson, whose father Dickie was known from Miami to the Panhandle for his racing exploits, collected $3,000 for his breeze around the Punta Gorda 3/8-mile paved oval. Tom Styer of Miramar was a distant second in the 13 car. J.R. Garcia of Balm took third in the 0 car. Darryl Shelnut of Lake City was fourth in the 77 car. Bobby Coyle of Miami was fifth in the 64 car.
Shelnut, a former Punta Gorda champion who was making his first appearance at the track in many moons, started pole and led the first nine laps in the 77 silver bullet.
With only three cautions the entire race, there weren't many chances for the field to bunch up. The cars were spread out before a caution on lap 92 gave Styer and Garcia one last shot at Anderson.
It wasn't even close, as Anderson pulled away to the easy win.
Two drivers opted to start at the back of the pack in search of a $2,000 bonus. The cars of Jeff Scofield and Steve Dorer ironically got together on lap 36, knocking out the 10 of Dorer. Scofield had a flat 12 laps later.
Styer recorded fast time in qualifying. The track lap record for Super Late Models is still held by Dickie Anderson.
In other races, Dale Dean III did his homework and reported for the Sportsman 35-lapper revved and ready. He nearly lapped the entire field in picking up the victory in the 19 car. John Hanuschik grabbed second in the 83 car, while Arcadia's Ricky Bullard Jr. was third in the red 77 car sponsored by Uncle Dave Morr.
Craig Amboyan's No. 18 Mustang was running second when he lost his clutch.
The Thunder Trucks 25-lap feature was a hotly contested affair. Ray Jayne of Punta Gorda started pole and was able to just keep his 35 truck ahead of second place Randy Kile in the 21. Mike Bialecki of Fort Ogden had just enough savvy to shade Chester Lusk for third. Robert St. John drove the 3 truck hard but could not catch a call.
In Road Warriors, it appeared Shane Leonard would grab another win, but his 18 car quit while he was leading on lap 13. Dan Benoit took it from there and buzzed to the checkered flag ahead of the orange blitz of Dean Burtrum and Jeff Firestine.
In the Fab Fours, Dave Malmberg Jr. outraced his old man in the 25-lap feature. Josh Fletcher was third.
Dwarf car action saw Billy Guise take a spirited 25-lapper. This coming Saturday night -- July 21 -- will see a return appearance by the Winged Sprint Cars of the Tampa Bay Area racing Association at CCMP.
