King Caylor Wins Again at Charlotte Motorsports Park
By Claude Lewis
PUNTA GORDA, FLA. (June 9) Danny Caylor doesn't race that often anymore, but when Super Stock competitors see the black No. 7 Camaro pulling into the pit parking area at Charlotte County Motorsports Park, they know their chances of winning are reduced to slim and none.
Caylor showed up to race in Saturday nights 50-lap feature, which was bad news for the rest of the Super Stocks.
Caylor, a former track champion, recorded fast time in lap qualifying and then backed it up by cruising to victory. The Lehigh Legend took the lead from polesitter Charles Parson and led the rest of the way.
Fort Myers teenager Codey Benoit followed Caylor for second place. Brian Richardson was third, Parson fourth and Ryan Pancoast fifth.
The Sportsman division also had a 50-lapper Saturday night. James Casady Sr. of Arcadia led the first 35 laps in the 7 car, but Troy Yates would have the last laugh after tailing him for most of the race.
On lap 36, Casady got up high on the track in turns three and four and Yates slipped underneath for the lead.
Yates, a teen out of Cape Coral, was able to keep the 22 car ahead of runnerup Dale Dean III. Joe Shaver of Arcadia was third in the 11 car. Casady was fourth and Clayton Williams fifth.
The car count was strangely low in the Outlaw Modifieds. The four-cylinder open wheel series ran its annual Lost Racers Memorial a 35-lap race. For the sixth year in a row, Doug Hopper out of Hudson won the memorial.
Hopper, who leads the Outlaw Mods in points, took the lead from John Parrish on lap 16. Parrish had a decent-sized lead but spun out by himself.
Hopper, who pilots the 15 car, took over from there, staying ahead of second place Cliff Steinmann and third place Mike Endee.
Endee, whose son was celebrating his first birthday, passed John Gilbert III for the lead on lap 6. Four laps later, Parrish took his 9 car to the front.
The last race of the night the Road Warrior 25-lapper provided excitement for the fans. Twice the orange 93 of Jeff Firestine was sent to the back for rough driving.
Firestine still finished fourth.
Hotshoe Terry Price had to pit twice, keeping him from being a factor.
Donnie Ollie Jr. was able to keep the 09 in front to the checkered. Dan Benoit ran hard for second. Dean Burtrum was third in one of four orange cars.
Randy Kile was again was a double feature winner, as he captured the Thunder Truck and Junkyard Dog races.
In Trucks, it looked like it might be the night for James Wright, as he led for most of the race in the 6. Kiles 21 came on strong near the end. The two ran side-by-side until Kile nosed ahead on the final lap. Richard Dupont was third.
In the 4-Cylinders, Kile beat out Les Couch and Chris Lucas.
In 4-Cylinder B, Jeff Malmberg was across the stripe first followed by Jason Carter and Dwayne Thibodeau.
