Allison tops Mini Stock 25, Conrad wins SLM at Orlando SpeedWorld
by Dave Westerman
Orlando Speedworld's Super Late Model class was out in force Friday on a warm, balmy and breezy evening and the fans were treated to an incredible comeback win by young Patrick Conrad.
Veteran Perry Lovelady led the opening two laps of the Super Late Model headliner before Jared Allison took over bringing heat race winners Ronnie Roach and Patrick Conrad with him. But on lap four, Conrad got into the back of Roach in turn four with Roach going for a spin. Track officials sent Conrad to the rear of the restart while Roach was placed back in second spot.
Allison continued to set the pace but caution was out again on lap six for Ricky Wood's turn two spin. After the green flew again, Conrad was on a mission moving back up to fourth spot in the span of just six laps. Conrad had just moved in on the second and third place duo of Roach and David Pollen' Jr. when the two made contact on the back stretch sending Roach into the wall.
That ended Roach's night while Pollen pitted for repairs and restarted at the tail of the field.
Conrad now found himself on Allison's bumper and he wasted little time blasting into the lead. Once out front, Conrad was in a different time zone as he won easily. Allison was all by himself in second but the battle for third came down to the wire as Lovelady held on for the position. Jimmy Crowe, Jr. made his return to Speedworld a good one as he took fourth while youngster Cody Pitts grabbed fifth in his first-ever start here. Joe Piazza took sixth spot while Jason Vail, Pollen, Gary Terry and Wood completed the top ten.
Half the Modified field was eliminated in turn one of the opening lap as fourth starter Alan Bruns found he had no brakes causing a huge crash that sent both he and pole sitter Glen Castro into the wall head-on. Both were done for the night as were the cars of Jimmy Winks, Doc McKinney and Mike Murphy. Shain Held was slated to start fifth but with the two cars in front of him, Castro and Bruns, on the hook, Held moved up to the pole with heat winner Gary Fountain, Sr. on the outside. The two raced side by side during the opening lap but Fountain spun going by the start-finish line and lost a lap to the field before he could get going again.
Held simply drove away to claim his third straight Speedworld win and sixth straight in FASCAR including his three recent wins at New Smyrna Speedway.
Mark Emberson was a distant second with Bobby Joe Woodley, Ricky Moxley and Fountain completing the finishers.
Pedie Allison led all the way to win the extra-distance 25 lapper for the Mini Stocks, his sixth win in seven races. James Ellis was giving Allison a run for his money but his car suffered mechanical ills and he fell by the wayside. R.J. Arnone picked up the second spot ahead of Kenny Padgett, Richie Laszlo and Mickey Wright.
Timmy Todd, Jr. made the most of his pole position starting spot as he led all the way to take his second Sportsman feature win of the year. After some opening-lap shenanigans that necessitated a complete restart, Todd's run to victory was slowed just twice by minor spins. Todd easily sped away on each restart to claim the win over a hard-charging Justin Reynolds who lost his runner-up spot in the tech shed after the race. Matt Towell moved up to second spot ahead of Pete Starr, Brett Woodley and Doug Samion with the remainder of the top ten Jason Foster, Henry Shepherd, Richard Hight, Derrick Wood and Whitney Poole. Sportsman heats were won by Todd and Starr.
Caution and red flags plagued the Super Stock feature and it was eventually checkered after just ten laps were completed.
Matt Jarrett led the opening three laps before Lee Wagner took over. Wagner was one of many cars involved in the numerous stoppages as he was spun out of the lead by Bobby Simcox who earned a trip to the rear of the field while Wagner kept the top position. A big lap ten crash saw the cars of Jason Pick, Jeff Parrish and James Frisbie eliminated and at that point track officials decided to call the race complete.
Wagner subsequently claimed his second win of the year with last weeks winner Ron McCreary second. Jarrett held on to claim third spot ahead of Ray Mullis and Dave "White Fire" Wright who avoided all the carnage for once.
Rounding out the top ten were Roger Benton, Geno Smith, John Bennett, Alaine Grogan and Jack Kennedy. Heat race wins went to Wagner and Sean Bass.
David Leeper II made it back to back wins over a huge field of Action Gator Tire Strictly Stocks. Rob Reynolds tried every trick in the book but could not get around Leeper and settled for second in front of Steve Anderson, Allen McClelland and Neil Kirby. Rounding out the top ten were Todd McCreary, Gary Thomas, Jim Erb, Dave Czerwinski, Jr. and Brent Bruner. Anderson and McCreary took the heat wins. The Strictly Stocks were again able to race for a cash purse thanks to Surgical Laser Solutions, Hog Heaven Restaurant, Brevard Rigging and Tractor Parts, Santa Claus, A-Nu Resurfacing Co. and Jimmy Scripter Racing.
Jason Rosarius was the Junior Stock winner over Wes Railing, Jr., Dillon Curtis and heat winner Anthony Pelican while Christine Leeper won the Powder Puff race.
